Xbox 360: Driving Circles Around the Competition

Since December of last year (2009), I've owned all three current generation consoles. In early 2007, I bought a Nintendo Wii. Why? Because I was intrigued by the new technology and I was psyched about the Virtual Console (I've utilized it too, by the way. Thanks to the Virtual Console, I finally played some SNES classics that I missed when I was a kid - namely Super Metroid and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.) In late 2007, I bought an Xbox 360. Why? Halo 3. Period. In late 2009, I bought a PS3. Why? Sony has some of the best exclusives on the market (Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted, Little Big Planet, and more.) Also, the PS3 doubles as a Blu-Ray player.

But Houston, we have a problem...

This is Houston... what seems to be the problem?

Well Houston, two of my current generation game consoles are collecting dust.

Ok... not literally, Houston. I just added this picture for dramatic effect. You know I'm a neat freak... plus, I don't even own a regular PS3, I have a PS3 Slim.

While I don't regret purchasing the Nintendo Wii or the PS3, I'm disappointed that I haven't played them as much as I intended to. Don't get me wrong... I've played them. However, in comparison to my Xbox 360, it *feels* like I don't play/use them much at all. The Xbox 360 is driving circles around the competition at my house. Here's the top reasons why:

  • Friends - All of my friends have an Xbox 360. Not all of them have a PS3 or Nintendo Wii.

  • Online Experience - Xbox 360 has the best online experience of the 3 consoles. It's accessible and it functions well.

  • Achievements - Xbox 360 did achievements first, and I love achievements!

  • Cross-Platform Games - Because of the first three reasons, I tend to buy/play most (if not all) of my cross-platform games for Xbox 360. There are a lot of great cross-platform games on the market... the two I'm really excited to get (hopefully) soon are Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.

  • Party Chat - Even when my friends and I aren't playing the same game, we'll often talk to each other over party chat (we're usually discussing the games we're playing and/or what achievement we're working on.)

  • FPS Games - I really enjoy playing console FPS games and the Xbox 360 is the best console for first person shooters (in my opinion.)

  • Netflix - Yeah, I know... Wii and PS3 have Netflix, too. However, they only recently went disc-less. Too late. I like using my Xbox 360 to watch Netflix. With all of the great TV shows and movies that are available on the instant queue, I haven't bought nearly as many videos on Blu-Ray as I thought I would.

Believe me, I've got a list of games I'd like to play on my Wii and PS3 (Donkey Kong Country Returns, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Uncharted 2, Little Big Planet 2, etc.) Between achievement hunting and online gaming though, I can't get myself to pull away from playing/using my Xbox 360 very often.

What about you? Which of the three current generation consoles are you getting the most use out of?
