We all love lists (or at least most of us do). So how about
another one? This is my top five worst games of 2013! Instead of doing a top
five best list, I’ve done a game awards for the best, leaving a list for under
achievers of this year. This is just my opinion, so please don’t take my
choices for a fact. Enjoy!
#5 Worst Game of 2013: Aliens: Colonial Marines
Wow, Gearbox. Just wow. After making the critically
acclaimed Borderlands and Borderlands 2 (and the not so acclaimed Duke Nukem
Forever), I thought that Gearbox would actually be able to make a more than
just good licensed game (a feat that only Rocksteady has really been able to
do). Boy was I wrong. With completely incapable A.I. (not just friendly, but
also the completely idiotic Xenomorphs), I thought that maybe the story would
be great. After all, it was supposed to be canon to Aliens (1986), but I was again wrong. The narrative to this game
completely shamed what Aliens did
right by completely ignoring it and doing whatever it wanted. But can the
gameplay itself at least make this train wreck sort of fun to play through? Not
really. While to gameplay wasn’t completely broken, and the actual weapons from
the Aliens universe seemed really cool to begin with, that soon changed. It
didn’t feel fun to shoot at the Xenomorphs (or the HUMANS?!). And did I mention
that there are people in this game who are fighting against you? Yeah. I don’t
think I was (and still is) the only one disappointed by how this game turned
out. But at least the multiplayer’s fun, right?
#4 Worst Game of 2013: The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct
And I was disappointed in Gearbox. After the amazing Walking
Dead episodic series by Telltale Games, I didn’t think that The Walking Dead
franchise could receive a bad game. But, thanks to Activision, my theory was
proven completely wrong. The only redeeming factor to this whole game is the
fact that Michael Rooker and Norman Reedus reprised their roles as Daryl and
Merle. The rest of this is just horrible. This game is just horrid to look at.
It’s easily something from the PS2 and Xbox (the original) generation. The
gunplay isn’t broken, but it’s not fun. The zombie A.I. is completely stupid.
The excuse that their zombies won’t work anymore. And these zombies are even
more stupid than normal zombies. Just watch AngryJoe’s review of the game.
You’ll see what I mean. The game ends before it even begins, leaving on a
rather sour note (and a turret section). And unlike Aliens: Colonial Marines,
which had at least a decent multiplayer mode, this has no other mode than the 4
hour single player. And no co-op! Activision is lucky that they have Call of
Duty and Skylanders, because they would be bankrupt otherwise.
#3 Worst Game of 2013: NBA Live 14
EA has sit out the last couple of years while the NBA 2K
franchise has picked up steam and really made a name for itself, not just in
the sports game genre, but in gaming in general, with a just all around
enjoyable experience. But, this year EA tried to get back into things and make
an insanely fun and entertaining NBA game. Too bad that they had no idea what
was actually being produced. NBA Live 14 released only for next generation
consoles, so you’d figure that this game at least would look nice, but it
wasn’t even close. It’s barely worthy of a current generation release, let
alone a next generation release. And the A.I. isn’t ready for the court, and
probably should be benched, instead. I don’t really have to say anything more,
because this game is just not enjoyable to play. EA has once again failed me.
First Battlefield 4’s horrible bugs and issues, and now this? Really?
#2 Worst Game of 2013: R.I.P.D. The Game
It’s bad if a great movie like X-Men or The Avengers gets a
horrible game, but what happens if a sub-par movie get a game? The 2nd
worst game of 2013, apparently. Although the movie was sub-par in quality, this
game is completely worthless. The only way to play is online with another
person (you can play co-op, but I wouldn’t put a friend through this garbage).
It looks completely horrible. I have seen only one game that makes me want to
virtually vomit more than this. The gameplay, which was either working but not
fun or only partially broken, is almost completely broken in R.I.P.D. The Game.
I barely got this thing to work like I wanted to part of the time. The enemy
A.I. is also not too decent. It will do really dumb things, and most of the
time they can at least partially succeed (because of the almost completely
broken controls). I don’t even know who developed this horrible game, and I would
prefer it to stay that way, because I would have a real good thing or two to
Well, I’ve gone over 4 of the worst games of this year, but
one has topped all of them. It has somehow managed to be named the worst game
of this console generation by many, including myself. I won’t even ask why this
was developed (or even green lit), because it hurts my head to think about
#1 Worst Game of 2013: Ride to Hell: Retribution
We all probably saw this coming. Easily the worst of 2013,
and maybe the worst of this generation, Ride to Hell: Retribution is not able
to be enjoyed in any way possible. This game is easily the worst looking game
of 2013. If you can find a game that was released this year that makes you want
to just turn off the console (or PC), let me know, because I don’t think I’ve
seen it yet. All of the character models look like muppets! And not even the
cool ones, but the really dumb looking ones. And the voice acting? Oh lord,
just stop it. It’s just completely horrible. I’ve heard of Japanese games that
are translated into English that aren’t this bad. It’s almost completely
humorous how horrible this game is. I wanted to laugh the entire time I didn’t
have a tear or two rolling down my face from how bad this game is. The gameplay
is completely broken. Kick for the win! And it just makes everything feel wrong
with playing video games in general. And it’s not short, so it doesn’t end
quickly (which you will definitely want). I don’t want 10-12 hours of complete
(Not so) Honorable Mention: TMNT: Out of the Shadows
