It’s been a whole year, and it’s been especially great for gamers, who’ve gotten such great games as The Last of Us and Grand Theft Auto V. And while it would have been easier to just do a top ten of the year list, this is much more enjoyable for me. So welcome to the codforlife game awards! I have ten awards to give out: Game of the Year; Best Shooter; Best Action; Best Racer; Best Character (Male); Best Character (Female); Best Multiplayer; Best Open World; Best Graphics ; and Best Story. This is just my opinion, so please don’t take this for a fact. Enjoy!

Best Shooter

These are the nominees for best shooter of 2013: COD: Ghosts; Battlefield 4; Metro: Last Light; Bioshock Infinite; and Crysis 3

The winner is… Bioshock Infinite! Bioshock Infinite showed that a shooter can have a decent story (and it truly did). Unlike the rest of the nominees (which were all a lot of fun to play), Bioshock Infinite added a little more to combat with the vigors, which worked like plasmids in Bioshock 1. Irrational crafted a truly spectacular shooter that shows off why so many people love the genre (and the Bioshock franchise, for that matter). And with Burial At Sea also being quite a lot of fun to play through, as well, I can’t wait to see where the franchise goes from here (though I think Ken Levine and the rest of Irrational should probably take a good vacation, after all the hard work they put into this game). Congratulations to Irrational Games and Bioshock Infinite!

Best Action

These are the nominees for best action game of 2013: DMC (2013); Tomb Raider; Splinter Cell: Blacklist; Ryse: Son of Rome; The Last of Us; Batman: Arkham Origins; GTA V

The winner is… The Last of Us! Unlike the rest of the choices on this list, The Last of Us does one thing that really struck home with me; instead of just killing and killing and not thinking about it, The Last of Us really made me contemplate what I was doing (and was a little overwhelming from time to time). But not the less, The Last of Us was a great game, and one that I just can’t forget about. Naughty Dog really did something special when they developed The Last of Us, and it shows that they cared. Congratulations to Naughty Dog and The Last of Us!

Best Racer

These are the nominees for Best Racing game of 2013: Gran Turismo 6; Forza Motorsports 5; Grid 2; Need for Speed: Rivals

The winner is… Forza Motorsports 5! While this is actually a harder choice to make, in the end, Forza 5 takes the cake. With the most stunning graphics I’ve seen in a racing game, it’s easy to say that it’s gorgeous. But it’s also highly addictive. I’d be able to play for hours on end and not even think about it. Congratulations to Forza Motorsports 5 (and the development team for Forza 5, which I don’t know the name of)!

Best Character (Male)

These are the nominees for Best Character (Male) of 2013: Joel (The Last of Us); Booker Dewitt (Bioshock Infinite); Trevor (GTA V); Dante (DMC); Black Mask (Batman: Arkham Origins); Sam Fisher (Splinter Cell: Blacklist)

The winner is… Joel (The Last of Us)! Unlike the rest of the nominees, Joel actually makes me contemplate what I’m doing in a violent a game as The Last of Us, which no character of any other violent game has been able to do before. And Joel has the survival factor that many other characters in an apocalyptic does not have. Most will try to be human, but Joel is real. He’s actually believable on a humanistic level, and that’s why I just can’t get over the fact that Joel is an actual video game character and not my neighbor (who’s planning ahead). Congratulations to Naughty Dog and Joel from The Last of Us!

Best Character (Female)

These are the nominees for Best Character (Female) of 2013: Lara Croft (Tomb Raider); Ellie (The Last of Us); Elizabeth (Bioshock Infinite); Rosalind Lutece (Bioshock Infinite); Jodie Foster (Beyond: Two Souls)

The winner is… Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)! Lara Croft is a very powerful character in the latest Tomb Raider reboot. Unlike most women in games, who are either damsels in distress or walking boy toys, Lara Croft can handily take down about 5 fully armed guys with assault rifles with a crummy bow. And she accurately represents how powerful women can actually be. Congratulations to Crystal Dynamics and Lara Croft of Tomb Raider (2013)!

Best Multiplayer

These are the nominees for Best Multiplayer of 2013: COD: Ghosts; Battlefield 4; GTA V (GTA Online); Splinter Cell: Blacklist; Killzone: Shadow Fall

The winner is… GTA V (GTA Online)! While I honestly enjoyed all of these, it’s almost impossible to both find something as fun as GTA Online or find anything like GTA Online. With the same open world as GTA V’s great single player (with the notable edition of 16 player servers), there’s plenty of stuff for anyone (and I do mean anyone) to do and have fun with. Congratulations to Rockstar North and GTA Online!

Best Open World

These are the nominees for Best Open World for 2013: GTA V; Saint’s Row IV; State of Decay; Batman: Arkham Origins

The winner is… GTA V! While all of the nominees for this award were great games, and ones to definitely play, it’s hard to play any of them after playing GTA V. With just the pure amount of content in the single player alone, GTA V is able to beat out games that have had more content with just single player. But they also added to incredible GTA Online (after they got it working like it was meant to). Congratulations to Rockstar North and GTA V!

Best Graphics

These are the nominees for Best Graphics of 2013: Ryse: Son of Rome; Killzone: Shadow Fall; Metro: Last Light; Bioshock Infinite; Dead Rising 3; The Last of Us; Forza Motorsports 5; Crysis 3; GTA V; Dead Rising 3; Pikmin 3

The winner is… Killzone: Shadow Fall! A next-generation game was obviously going to win this award, and Killzone: Shadow Fall is the best looking of the next-generation games (so far). Unlike the other Killzone games (which were also beautiful), Killzone: Shadow Fall actually adds more color to its current palette, and it looks even better for it. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing when I saw Killzone: Shadow Fall. Congratulations to Guerrilla Games and Killzone: Shadow Fall!

Best Story

These are the nominees for Best Story of 2013: The Last of Us; Bioshock Infinite; Metro: Last Light; GTA V; Splinter Cell: Blacklist; Beyond: Two Souls; Batman: Arkham Origins

The winner is… The Last of Us! This has to be the second hardest choice to make (only behind Game of the Year), but in the end, The Last of Us earned the award for best story. I was emotionally impacted by the actual narrative to The Last of Us, which is something no other game on this list can claim (although a few got close). Joel, Ellie, and the other characters of this game actually feel like people in The Last of Us, and I couldn’t stand to see one of them die (or get injured, in some cases). Congratulations to Naughty Dog and The Last of Us!

Game of the Year

These are the nominees for Game of the Year for 2013: GTA V; Metro: Last Light; Splinter Cell: Blacklist; Dead Space 3; Killzone: Shadow Fall; Batman: Arkham Origins; The Last of Us; Need for Speed: Rivals; Battlefield 4; Saint’s Row IV; Bioshock Infinite; Tomb Raider; DMC; Crysis 3; Grid 2; Forza Motorsports 5; Injustice: Gods Among Us; Dead Rising 3; Gone Home; The Walking Dead: 400 Days

The winner is… GTA V! With so many choices for game of the year, it was especially hard to decide who would get this prestigious award, but GTA V somehow was able to earn this award from me. With a great story, some of the best current-generation graphics available, fun gameplay that can keep people playing for hours, incredible characters, an open world worth playing around in, and an extremely fun multiplayer that keeps giving us new content, GTA V definitely was made for many playthroughs and years of fun. GTA V is able to do for years what most games can only do temporarily; keep me interested and keep me entertained. Congratulations to Rockstar North and GTA V!

Hope you guys have enjoyed the first annual codforlife’s game awards! Tell me what your best of these awards are, how you felt about my choices, or just how you feel about the idea of this itself, in the comments below. Thanks for reading. Have a nice day!
