Four Things I Miss about Last Generation



I woke up this morning a grumpy old man, bemoaning the good old days of last generation consoles. I’ve decided to indulge myself in my grumpiness and list four things that I really do miss from last generation.

 

1. Corded controllers

I miss corded controllers not only for their nostalgia, but also for their accessibility. Wireless controllers are maniacally inaccessible, the reason being that if you are in a wheelchair and you drop them, you can’t just drive over to the console and use the cord to pull the controller back up. If you drop a wireless controller, you have four options: (1) find a new controller, (2) do something else, (3) get someone else to pick the controller up for you, or (4) use a service dog or other piece of assistive technology (if you have that option). The first option is bad because you always have to have more than one controller within your reach, and even then it’s a pain to have to go into your system settings and reassign your new controller as controller number one. The second option is just stupid. I’m using the controller to play a game—presumably that’s what I would like to continue doing. Option three is perhaps the easiest if you ignore the reality that slavery is wrong, therefore somebody may not always be there to pick it up. Last, and definitely not the prettiest, is the assistive tech option. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve died in a game because my service dog is trying to pick up the controller and has to jostle it a bit to get it in her mouth. More often than not, I end up running off a cliff or dying in some other newbish way while my service dog is picking up the controller for me. The same problem can be said for any other piece of assistive technology: these run the risk of pushing unwanted buttons, and thereby endanger your gameplay.

 

2. One price gets everything consoles

This next one is old-fashioned, I admit it. But I have been gaming for close to twenty years, and I don’t see much point in buying a system and then paying a monthly fee to get extra content. Don’t get me wrong, some of that extra content is worth it, especially in Sony’s PlayStation Plus program. But I still don’t see the point in paying a monthly fee to have the privilege of buying certain games at a discount. And, even more emphatically, I will never pay for the “privilege” of online multiplayer, no matter what the game is. The fact that I have to pay for an experience that has been integral to gaming since it’s very earliest days (and that had been free until Microsoft released Xbox Live) maddens me to no end. It may be worth it to pay monthly fees for certain features, especially if the service offers free games or special access to classic games. But I think paying a fee to enroll in a discount program is counterproductive, because even though the discounts may outweigh the initial cost of the membership, I’m probably not going to buy every single discounted game that my membership entitles me to. Bottom line: I still miss the days when you could walk into a store and walk out with a completely self-contained console—even if it did have to have a separate memory card.

 

3. An emphasis on split-screen gaming

On that same note, it seems a shame that split-screen gaming is not as popular as it was in the previous generation. Video games are a social medium, not simply a competitive one. And I think that such a focus on online gaming takes away the social aspect of games and focuses purely on beating other players, since it is very unlikely that player will begin friendships with people they meet in online matches. It’s not impossible, but it is not likely either. Think about it. When was the last time you got together with your buddies and made a night out of a game like Halo or Call of Duty? Most of that kind of stuff is now done online. And let’s face it—while gaming with someone in Singapore may give you the opportunity to get to know someone who is across the planet, how many of us will actually strike up a friendship with someone whom we only know as DarkMushroom445? I can see it now. My inbox will be flooded with angry emails saying, “Split screen setups made games hard to play!” But that was part of the experience. In fact, that’s my point. Online gaming seems to take all the external fun out of multiplayer gaming, and only allows players the experience within the game. But there is so much more to gaming! I, for one, miss the days when you and your buddies would pile into a tiny dorm room and spend half the night blowing each other up in James Bond, and then forever after tease each other because one guy shut out the other three in a twenty kill death match, just by using Odd Job’s hat.

 

4. Completely self-contained games

I would be surprised if I were alone on this last issue. But the fact that the new Fire Emblem will be released on day one with paid DLC is ridiculous. Why can’t we have games that are complete by themselves? Why do we need to have all this extra content? I, for one, don’t spend fifteen more dollars after I buy a sixty dollar game. I want to move on to the next game, even if the DLC is for a game that is one of the best. And even more irksome is the practice that game companies have of releasing pointless DLC, such as extra characters in Mortal Kombat or new maps in Halo 4. I have no desire, personally, to see Freddy Kruger beat up Sub-Zero in a no-holds-barred Mortal Kombat match. And I’m not going to spend fifteen bucks on characters such as Rain and Skarlet who could have just been included in the main game. It just seems like most DLC is a cheap money grab rather than a concerted effort at improving games. I wish that instead of releasing DLC—even good DLC—developers would focus of giving us new and exciting IPs rather than just giving us little side missions to buy and add on to existing games.

  • There are a number of things I miss from the past generations, split screen is one that I highly agree on. Meeting with friends online is way more effort than sitting next to them. You need mics, you both have to own the game, and most importantly, you need a good connection to the internet, and should that fade, you're booted out of the game. I still very much enjoy split screen gaming.
    I also don't enjoy paying for online play.
    I don't really have a problem with DLC. I dont view the game as "incomplete" because in most cases, the game feels complete to me without the DLC. To me, the DLC is more satisfying because it's a "want more?" offer. I don't feel inclined to buy the DLC if I didn't enjoy the game or it doesn't look good, but it seems like a bonus to me.

    As for the dropping of the controller, what if you taped a cord to an empty area of the controller, then wrap the other end around the wrist? Kind of like the wii. this would make it possible to pull up, and if the cord is short enough, avoid fall damage entirely. Just have to find a good way to keep the cord on the controller I suppose...
  • Well, I have echoed some of these sentiments in a couple of my blogs, so you can imagine that my inner "grumpy old man" nodded in agreement with some of what you said. On the DLC front, I would have to say that I enjoy having a reason to go back to certain games. You can also choose not to get any DLC, which is why it has never really bothered me. BLiNDFATES brings up a suggestion that I was about to. I don't know how handy you are, or if you know any handy people, but my son has a habit of gaming like a spastic chimp, and I would watch in frequent horror as my controller would go soaring through the air. To counter this, I drilled a small hole through the bottom left of the controller and snagged an old Wii-remote strap and string it through. Now it just smacks him in the head.
  • I tend to not think of games with DLC as being incomplete, unless the game itself truly feels like it's missing something without that DLC. And I've yet to play a game where I felt that I needed DLC to get the full experience.

    Online gaming is going to have a cost associated with it, simply due to bandwidth and account storage. Plus, playing with friends is my biggest incentive to keep playing a game; a year's subscription to Xbox Live Gold runs about $5 a month, and you can always find deals to get it cheaper (I just sent someone else a link to Best Buy's offer of 13 months for $35.)

    I'll definitely agree about split screen though; aside from fighting games, there aren't too many titles I can pick up and enjoy with friends when they're over. As much as I love playing games online with friends, I enjoy playing games with friends in the same room as well.

  • I agree with all of these.  Especially #2.  I pay for PlayStation Plus, but that is because I have gotten over 15 free games (that I wanted to play anyway) and earned my $50 back in no time at all.

  • I'm kind of 50/50 on the wired controllers. Sometimes I like em'. Most of the time it's just a hassle. As for the one price gets everything console... AMEN, BROTHER!!! Ever notice how most of these "value bundles" aren't they great of a value? And finally, self contained games. Yezzir, I'm in agreement there too. I've actually never spent a dime on DLC ever. I don't know if I should be proud of that or not. What I do love is that if you're willing to wait long enough, a lot of these companies include "complete" versions with all of the paid DLC included. But by then, all of the hoopla for the game has died down and everyone is on to the next thing.

  • i absolutely hate that games these day rely on the crutch of DLC so heavily. I get that they are trying to make money, but if the content is already completed when a game launches then why the heck should I have to pay extra for it. It seems like a total jip to me

  • Xbox 360 has always offered corded controllers. PS3 does too, I think. At the very least you have the option of purchasing a long micro usb cord and having it always plugged in. Wii, you're outta luck.

    I'm with ya on #2. Combine the fee of xbox live with the existence of online passes, and folks who get games second hand are paying for on disc functionality of multiplayer twice on top of paying for the internet in the first place.

    As gamer and an 80s baby, playing on the couch with friends is always an experience I miss. Every year I host at least 1 retro gaming party so my friends and I have a reason to get our old consoles out of storage and relive those glory days.

    I'm curious if we'll ever see comepletly self contained games again. I remember when the type of stuff that is locked with micro transactions were things we could unlock by beating levels within a time limit or earn a gold ranking. The kinda stuff that only rewards achievements now.

    I miss cheat codes. There I said it. I miss cheat codes.
  • I feel some of your pain. I have been gaming since 85 on the original NES and I never thought much about things like Xbox Live until Mass Effect 3 came out. I just ignored it pretty much. As time progressed I noticed less and less of my friends would like to come by and game and so I ended up buying a Live subscription and luckily through Mass Effect multiplayer I made a lot of friends who I then followed over to other games like NBA 2k13 and Halo 4 but its not the same. I hate paying for content that is already on my game disc. I don't mind DLC when it adds to the game. Something like Dragonborne which I hear is amazing but I don't play Skyrim but I appreciate what it brought for players who do. It was a better more indepth experience in the game. I like that about Mass Effect 3 DLC that the Multiplayer content is all free and the single player content adds to the game and in the case of Leviathan actually made the game better. Even Omega is a lot of fun even if it adds very little to the game itself.

  • There's something else I missed about the last generation: Better VARIETY as this generation is overly dominated by the giants who make mostly FPS's and other games with angry bald men.

    Online gaming is what mostly killed the US arcade as most players don't care about comerade-ship or the intense feel of a face to face challenge. For the most part, online has its great share of scrubs.

    DLC? Honestly I'd rather have it be things that improve the game a time after release as opposed to money milking extras. Aksys's handling of Blazblue CS DLC is a nice case as it A) added characters that got added to a later arcade revision, B) free update patch to said revision's mechanics and C) certain extras that aren't easy to unlock (basically you get good enough to unlock them for free or you pay to unlock them)

    And I miss cheat codes as these days games are too much about achievements and too bad most of them are gotten through the course of the game or doing inane stuff you normally wouldn't do. That leaves a few things that are truly worthy of achievements.

  • Agree with more or less all of this. I especially hate the DLC phenomenon. It's turned into "Lets NOT put this into the game, so we can sell it later as DLC.", and it *** works on majority of the people!

    Now with these rumors of DRM style of control over your console and not being able to play used games. The used game thing I can get over quick because I don't buy used games - I just don't(I do borrow some games from friends, so I will miss that). Although if the "always online" feature is a real thing with the Xbox or PS4; I will not buy either one. Plain and simple. I already have Steam, and an ok computer to play games on; I might as well upgrade to a better gaming PC and deal with the slightly more forgiving Steam DRM. Also the seasonal deals on Steam are pretty awesome... Just saying.
