Fixing a 360: A Prologue

So recently, the video has gone out on my Xbox 360.  No red ring of death, no warning signs (besides a little flicker the day before), and poof!  Very depressing, especially since it's the long weekend and I was hoping to catch up on some gaming.  But life is life, and I have decided that before I send it in to Microsoft and have them fix it for $100 in what would probably take them 10 minutes, I am going to give it a try myself.

Now I know the Internet can be a dangerous place, but I have done quite a bit of research and believe I have found the problem:  thermal paste!  So I'm hoping to take off my heatsinks and fix the dealie-o soon.  I ordered some screws, nuts, and bolts to make sure I can put it all back together, so I have yet to complete my task.  I will provide a full blog when it is complete, letting you know whether it worked or not.  Keep your fingers crossed!

  • Good luck man!

  • And then, in an unfortunate twist of fate, it wasn't succesful. While trying to fix it, you managed to make it not work at all. And from trying to fix it, you have tragically voided your warranty. Yay, Do it Yourself!

  • Yeah I'd be careful man. My cousin tried to fix his, and all that did was void his warranty.

...Of course he then just bought another one for $130. :P

  • You might as well buy a new 360 arcade and just transfer your harddrive.  I've had mine since 2008, and the disc drive recently began acting up.  I took it to the Microsoft store to have the techs look at it, and was told that it would cost $150 to fix it(just for the disc drive!).  Why waste your money on an expensive repair, just to have something else break down on you later?

  • @xxxskolxxx & @Chance, my warranty's already up, so that doesn't really matter too much.

@sealsaa The repair is looking to only cost me about $30, which I am willing to spend in trying.  Plus if it doesn't end up working, I will be taking your advice and putting my hard drive on someone else's cheap, unwanted 360. :)

  • Good luck. I'm interested to see if it does or doesn't workout, either way let us know.
