Call of Duty, a look at the franchise.

This blog will contain epic information on the call of duty series from start to finish. So fasten your seat belts folks, I'll be recapping everything that has happened and will happen including MW3 (WW3) my thoughts on it and where the franchise is headed. For starters here's a bit of wikipedia information that I shamelessly coppied just for you guys :)

Call of Duty is a first-person and third-person shooter video game series franchise, created by Ben Chichoski. The series began on the PC, and later expanded to consoles and handhelds, and several spin-off games have also been released alongside the main series. The majority of the games in the series have been set primarily in World War II, with the exception of Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 which are set in modern times, and Black Ops which is set in the Cold War era.

Call of Duty is a video game based on the Quake III Arena engine (id Tech 3), and was released on October 29, 2003. The game was developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. The game simulates the infantry and combined arms warfare of World War II.[3] Call of Duty was accompanied in September 2004 by an expansion pack, Call of Duty: United Offensive, which was also produced by Activision, but developed by Gray Matter Interactive with contributions from Pi Studios. The game follows the American paratroopers, British paratroopers and the Red army. The Mac OS X version of the game was ported by Aspyr Media. In late 2004, the N-Gage version was developed by Nokia and published by Activision. Other versions were released for PC, including Collector's Edition (with soundtrack and strategy guide), Game of the Year Edition (includes game updates), and the Deluxe Edition (which contains the United Offensive expansion and soundtrack; in Europe the soundtrack was not included). Since November 12, 2007, Call of Duty and its sequels have been available for purchase via Valve's content delivery platform, Steam.[4]

Call of Duty 2

Call of Duty 2 is a first-person shooter video game and sequel to the critically acclaimed game Call of Duty. It was developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. The game is set during World War II and is experienced through the perspectives of soldiers in the Red Army, British Army and United States Army. It was released on October 25, 2005 for PC, June 13, 2006 for Mac OS X and November 15, 2005 for the Xbox 360. Other versions were made for mobile phones, Pocket PCs, and Smartphones.

Call of Duty 3

Call of Duty 3 is a World War II first-person shooter and the third installment in the Call of Duty video game series. Released on November 7, 2006, the game was developed by Treyarch, and was the first major installment in the Call of Duty series not to be developed by Infinity Ward. It was released on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox, and Xbox 360.[5] Call of Duty 3 follows the American, Canadian, British, French Resistance and Polish armies after D-day in the Falaise Gap.

Although I've never played any of the call of duty games leading up to Modern Warfare, I can say that they are realistic experiances of the WW1 and 2 era. All obtained high metacritic scores and furthermore helped to pave the way for what online military shooters are today. Their greatness will be forever remembered.

Yeah that about sums it up. The first Call of Duty's (1 2 3) were good games but lagged behind Medal of Honor until this rare jewal shattered expectations...

Back in 07 in my eyes this is the perfect war game that had ever been created. Never in my wildest dreams had I even thought of experiencing frantic war in such perfection (if you can call it that). The multiplayer was fun and all but what I really enjoyed doing was playing the campaign over and over and over. Must have played All Ghilied up at least 20 times and played the mission where you blow the man's arm off about 40 times. If only there was co-op :(. Moving on...

This came as a bit of surprise. Why go back to WW2 when so many games had done the same thing? The Campaign was very lackluster and FINALLY they made it co-op. It was majorly flawed by the annoying pictures in your way making the screen a lot smaller than it should be. They also cut out the co-op campaign mission "Vendetta" (my favorite). While not taking any huge steps forward as far as multiplayer and campaign was concerned they did do one thing right. NAZI ZOMBIES became a huge hit and before long everyone was playing Der Rise with their buddies, and were temporarily satisfied until the next Modern Warfare hit the shelves.

Zombies was fun but the maps were too small and even Der Rise couldn't quench my thirst for a more deeper zombie killing experiance. Finally Treyarch took a backseat and Infinity Ward stepped up their game with the biggest blockbuster to hit the shelves in a while...

Yeah baby!!! It finally came the game you were dreaming about. In the most epic game of all time Captain Price and his mustache returns, to kick terrorist fanny, while "roach" and "soap" (who comes up with these names?) play a part in globe-trotting goodness. Although the campaign had lost something that the first MW had, the set pieces and nonstop action were thrilling. Spec-ops serves as a replacement for zombies and co-op mode. Surprisingly I found that it was immensely satisfying, going for that next star took me about a year but I finally got all 67.

The multiplayer got a complete makeover this time around. They finally stepped up and put killstreaks in as a major part of the experiance. A WHOLE LOT of haters critisized the quick scoping, hacking, nube tubing, chopper gunners, and just about everything else they could think of but let's face it... Some people got amazingly good at this game. On a side note my total game play time was close to 11 days. Let me just say if a game is addicting enough to suck you in for that many hours, you know it's a classic.

Black ops had come and so had the critics. Although not a bad game, people were expecting more from them but that's okay. Blops is just a fun game when you get down to the nitty gritty. Wager matches were added, let me just say that these are really fun and adds huge intensity to the atmosphere. Zombies got some major overhaulin. Now the goal isn't to find a corner and hide with the ray gun but to get juggernog and run around like a maniac blasting fools into next year! The add on packs First Strike and Escalation are refreshing new maps that will give you a few more days excuse to go back to playing but they arn't anything huge. Now to talk up a little speculation...

The teaser trailers were okay at best. This new trailer is absolutely sick. I can guaranty you this will be (as always) best seller. But will the actual game be any good?? Many a person lost interest in the franchise when blops failed to impress, what tricks do the skeleton crew of infinity ward have up their sleve? As many of you know they arn't alone. Raven is working on multiplayer and Hammerhead is helping them out on campaign. There is also rumored some sort of survival mode in it too.

Whatever happens, we must be prepared for the future and voice our (very many) opinions. A man wrote a blog about a wish list he wanted from MW3 a couple of days ago and I liked it. No Noob tubing, quick scoping, hugely overpowered killstreaks, they must go. I'm not sure about second chance. I like the way it was handled in Blops about the nube tubing and second chance. They need to keep most of MW3 the same though. For goodness sakes though please increase the length of the campaign I would like to take at least a week to beat it. More customization is always nice and a big stockpile of weapons to choose from never hurt anyone either. Let them keep in mind though that each installment seems to gradually be fading away from realism. Try to keep it within the limits of reality guys, but let us have fun with some wacky weapons at the same time.

Well that wraps it up what do you think of MW3 and the franchise as a whole? I love comments... so please let me read and reply to them. Peace out!!!

Comments
  • if you're looking at the franchise you'd probably do well to insert at least SOMETHING about each individual game that released prior to Modern Warfare. They're good games, and though outperformed by MOH, they each deserve individual credit.
  • Well that pretty much summed up my whole idea of the series also. I'd like to agree with Evil Deej by saying that some pre MW game info would be appreciated. On the same token, I'd like to make a personal comment as well. It may be my favorite series ever and I really hope that MW3 kicks some butt. I also would like to see sniping get an overhaul. I believe Blackops ruined it.
  • I lost alot of hope for the series after I kept getting killed by nube tubes and far to many over powered perks(and don't even ask me how many times someone let off a nuke and yet the score board showed that nobody would have even had enough kills to get one).

I'm hoping that MW gets another over-haul with this third title, because if not, I might not even buy it. If they keep the over-powered kill streaks they need to make it so that the person gets less time with them or kills earned from the streak don't go towards the next streak.

    P.S.
The hero pic that you have made me fall off my chair, it surprised me that *koob* much.
  • Sorry guys if you want me to I can edit the blog and put up some pre modern warfare info. But since I've never played those before I didn't feel like I was qualified to do that.

  • A somewhat perplexing and personal take on the topic... more of a look at your history than the franchise. Not without it's worth, but I think the title and lead-in are a bit off-putting

  • You really should download the first two games. I believe you can find them on XBL. They are excellent and it would be interesting for you to see what lead up to Modern Warfare and shaped the franchise how it is now. Believe it or not the first Call of Duty was a pretty big multiplayer hit. It was even featured on an episode of The Office.

  • Modern Warfare blew my mind too. When it released it seemed like the perfect game.

  • Well as far as the series goes i like it alot. If only there was a way to stop the cheating for a little longer so i could enjoy these games without people doing dumb stuff. As far as noob-tubing goes i never did it but the game gives you the weapons to use so no use crying about it. People are going to do it. its not cheating but is a cheap easy kill but hey whatever
