Opinions: IGN's Top 100 Modern Games: 80-61

Today IGN added another 20 to their list of best modern games. I have played a few from this list but not many, so today is once again going off what I've heard. You can find the list here. The list in this link will start at 80 so if you haven't been following the list you should go back to the beginning. So here it is my opinions on the list.

The list started with a game I would not have expected. Taking the #80 spot is Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. When I saw this game first shown off I thought it was interesting, but I was never a huge racing fan, and it started to look more and more like a common racing game. But apparently its good enough to make #80 on the top 100.

Looking at the next spot, I have to give praise to the downloadable space again, it has already shown up a few times in the list and now again at #79 with Bionic Commando: Rearmed. I haven't played this game, but I'm sure it is a high quality platformer action.

Next up is a fighting game, and if I'm not mistaken the first to make the list, Marvel vs. Capcom 3. I love Marvel vs. Capcom 2 in the arcades and I enjoyed the demo on XBLA, but I wasn't about to spend $60 dollars on it for consoles. I'm sure with the great character roster and the fast action oriented combat that the game is worthy of its spot, if not even being worthy of a higher spot.

At #77 we have Shogun 2: Total Warrior. Never played the game and really don't know anything about it, so I'm not going to speak for it.

Another surprise was the inclusion of Brain Age at #76. I would not have guessed it, but it was a pretty good game. Does it deserve a spot higher than some previous games, well that's debatable, but seeing a creative concept like Brain Age on the list is a good sign.

Next we have a role-playing game, The Witcher 2. Never played the Witcher games, but the praise IGN gave it makes be think it should be higher.

This device made it on the list much more than I would have thought, but again at #74 an Iphone/Ipod/ipad game, Cut the rope, appears. No doubt Cut the Rop is a fantastic experience, but I personally think Angry Birds beats it out, or at least could have come closer to the game area. If you have an i device and never played Cut the Rope, then go download the free version right now. It plays on a simple mechanic of just cutting a rope, but it is so addicting and fun you don't want to stop.

Up now is a PSN exclusive, which I cannot play, but I heard good things about. This game is Flower, a artistic experience more than a gameplay one, so I hear. I really have no idea what is up with this game, but Journey looks cool and its by the same studio, so I'm going to say that this is a good game. Deserving of #73, well I'll let someone who played it decide.

The 70's round up with a RPG, a puzzle game, and a twinstick shooter, three very different genres, but three more than likely high quality games. At #72 World Ends With You takes a place higher than I would have expected, but from what I here it is well deserved. Some games fly under the radar and I think this is one, I never got to play it myself, but from what I've seen, I almost went out and bought it. This article might finally convince me to find it somewhere cheap and buy a copy.

The puzzle game is a Ds game called Meteos. I never heard of this game until now, but it sure looks fun, even if unoriginal. Though you can shoot your block into space, which is kinda original. Super Stardust HD finished off the 70's with its awesome twinstick shooter mechanic similar to geometry wars. I really hope geometry wars makes the list now, mostly because it deserves it.

Comments
  • Fable 2 would be way higher on my list, but it's nice to see it on here at least. Wake's spot is debatable in my opinion, seems a little too high. Sometimes I feel like that game gets a little bit more praise than it deserves.
  • Super Star Dust is a fantastic game well worth it's price. It's made by the same people that made Dead Nation (I think this is also PS3 exclusive though) and Outland which is their most recent release. The developer really knows how to make digital games. Burnout Paradise and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit were made by the same developer. So if you can't find yourself a copy of Burnout (I hear they can be hard to come by) then you might just want to pick up NFS.
  • Is ign qualified to make this list? I'm not sure. But they managed to put together an amazingly awesome zelda art collection for the anniversary I'd really recommend for people to check out.
  • From this list I have played the following games:
    Burnout Paradise #64

And nothing else. It's so weird to look at this list while being a pure PC gamer. I only know half of these games or less.

I'm wondering, where I can encounter Fallout 3. Or Oblivion. I hope Titan Quest also makes this list.
