Opinions: IGN's Top 100 Modern Games: 100-81

Today IGN.com started their countdown for the best 100 games of the modern day. Today they showed the first 20 games, or last if you will, on their countdown. The list had everything, mobile games, PS3 games, iphone games,  the whole shebang. This is my quick thoughts on what that list contained today.

Nothing on this list was to incredible, most of it was fairly mediocre, which I expected from the first couple of games so I guess I was pretty spot on. Some games here I thought should be there, others, maybe not so much, others maybe even deserved a higher spot. I'll break that all down in here, and you can read the list in a link I will provide later in the blog. Now I didn't play most of these, so this is really based a lot on the knowledge of the game and the scores it got, so please don''t get mad, just say what you think, especially if you played the game.

The list, which you can see here, started with a game I've only ever heard of because of its difficulty, Demon Souls. I've never played the game, but I'm sure the game is incredible. The next game I played a little with my cousin, but I did not expect it to be on here. I'm sure glad it did though because it deserves it, the game is Leauge of Legends. I love League of Legends, it is one of my favorite free to play games. It is heavily inspired by DOTA, which was a custom map in Warcraft. It is a really fun game, and glad it made the list.

Then of course we have some iphone games. In the 90's were three of them, Angry birds, Tiny wings, and sword and sworcery EP, THe only game I played out of those is Angry birds which snagged the #93 spot. I honestly believe that that one should have been a little higher, the game is simple, for the most part, but it awesomely addicting and really fun.

Nintendo also got some love with Epic Yarn, Kirby's yarn filled adventure on Wii, which came in at #95. I have yet to play this game, but it almost surprises me to see it make the list. I heard it was good, but did not expect it to show up on a list of 100 modern games. It was a pleasant surprise to say the least.

Shooters were not left out either, being represented in the 90's by Far Cry 2 and the original Crysis, as well as Resistance 2. I have not played these either, but from what I've seen, all of these look deserving to be on the list, and I'm surprised to see Crysis so low on the list. From what I've heard the game is really good and the visuals are beautiful.

The Sims 3 is also in the list, but I was never a huge Sims fan, so I don't really have much to say there.

Comments
  • Valkyria Chronicles 2 needed to be higher.
  • In case you are wondering, Killzone 2 was a flawed but good game. It had some issues that KZ3 took care of, like multiplayer and the controls.
  • Making a list of this type would be very difficult, but it sounds like they're doing a good job so far. It is nice to see a game like Splosion Man make the list, it's probably one of the best platformers ever made and extremely fun. So many great games this generation though, especially when you throw in downloadable ones as well. It'll be interesting to see the top 10, so I'll be staying tuned.
  • I've been wanting to play Far Cry 2 for quite a long time; might look to see if I can pick it up for peanuts on Amazon.
