The lights are on
It's been a long strange trip for me as I progressed throughout my gaming days. Admittedly I have/always will be a Sony "fan-boy" (I really hate that word, but it's the easiest way to sum me up I suppose) but yet never been the kid who gets his console the day it comes out. In fact I typically do not get the console until at least 3-4 years after it debuts just because I never am able to stomach the shovelware releases that are inevitable with launch titles.
Now before I go rambling on a bit too much let me give you just a bit more backstory into what I am like with my games. When I first got my PSone it was a whole other experience. The reason I got it was because my cousin (and one of my best friends) had gotten it and during a sleep-over one night showed me just what it was like. Before he and I played that to me gaming was always kiddy stuff, with mario and the like dominating my image of gaming. It was interesting but never wow. I rememember actually just how many systems my friends all had, including one buddy who actually had SegaCD. Now all of my friends and I would hang around playing various systems including NES, Atari 2600, and Sega Genesis so I wasn't new to it. The PSone though was vastly different.
The first game I ever saw was resident evil. Oh my god. That game was so real and so scary at the time (mind you I was in grade-school) that I think I slept with the night-light on for the next few weeks. It was unlike anything I had ever seen, with completely different gameplay than anything else. That was only the beginning though as the next game we popped in was a little classic known as Twisted Metal.
Let me just start by saying there will never be another game like that one. The various glitches you could do, the two-player co-op in it, everything about the game was just fun. At one point we actually made a bowl of popcorn on the final boss fight to come back and realise we were both about to be killed. It was a good time. That though was the game that got me into gaming.
Shortly after that I asked for one of my own for christmas. It was to be my 'big' present of the year. Mind you the system was already pretty old so the price was good and the games that were out could be bought cheap (especially the 'greatest hits' which I have invested heavilly in. In fact at least 1/2 of my games are on PSN and I wouldn't be surprised to see that number grow in the near future.)
Of my christmas present the best thing about it was that it actually brought my dad and I together. We became obsessed with a game called "Tomb Raider." It was a great time for both of us that we would spend in front of the TV working out these long logic puzzles as well as everything else about the game. In fact I'd say he was more addicted to it than I was, something that was quite comical at the time. We ended up gaming through the first two together beating both before stopping after some unfortunate events befell our family.
Despite that though I continued to game, keeping my games that I had in a case that was nearly all but forgotten about (with the exception of two games. FFVIII and Ballblazer Champions). But after I got my PS3 and being strapped for cash recently I opened it back up. Looking it over it's amazing to see what I had in there, and just how many good games there were. Everything from the original Rainbow Six to the highly underrated Legend of Legaia. Heck it even included the frogger game (which was admittedly me just seeing frogger and thinking how much fun I had with the original before buying it.) But despite a few really bad games I'm amazed at what I still had.
Now then I've broken them out again, and I think what I'll end up doing in my free time this week (between Demon's Souls grinding and finishing up with that playthrough) will be breaking these out and seeing how they have withstood the test of time.
Below is the order in which I'll review them.

*For the reviews I will play for 1-2hours at least. Straight through no interruptions. Certain games may get more, others less but they will all be reviewed. Be warned this may take weeks though as I am starting a new job now.
**Games will be rated on the scale of 1-10 with the only decimals allowed being increments of .25. They will be judged in four categories. Gameplay, Visuals, Sound, Replay Value. That will then be totaled up for a final score.
PS: I think I may have to find a place that sells some PS1 games, because I just thought of a game I need to pick up for this to be complete. If anyone remembers it, the game is called Einhander and I have to say was one of the few awesome games I never owned. That and I also need an excuse to go out and pick up the original Ape Escape.
