Metalheads are a special breed. There are plenty of us, but we are spread around the world in isolated pockets in the community. We only congregate when we hear the call (which is a combination of guitar, bass, drums, and [depending on where you going] keyboards), and proceed to revel in the greatest of all music forms.

In case you didn't realize from my ridiculous opening, I am a metalhead. I despise all other music (except rock, which I can tolerate), 11 is my 1, and everyone I know can't recognize a single band I have. It's awesome. Even though I have only been into metal for about a year and a half now, I have amassed a respectable selection of bands and albums, and now I am here to recommend a bunch of them with no explanation as to why you should care other than the fact that they all rule. If you wish to expand your metal library or just want to see what is so great about this "satanic" music, check them out. Also, please don't fret if I missed a few albums that you would have included or put one album from a band over another, I have a lot of music and not a lot of time to listen to it all. Click each link for a song from each album.

It's a little too early to do one of these. But I don't care, so I'm doing it anyway! Enjoy!

(Also, keep in mind that I have very little money, so don't be surprised if your favorite game is missing. I can't buy everything)

5) Alan Wake

Not many people payed attention to this game when it released a while ago, probably due to the fact that it was released on the same day as another unknown game... Nonetheless, critics and gamers alike (well, those who bought it) loved the amazing atmosphere that Remedy pulled off. Not one to put all of its eggs in one basket, Remedy also created one great shooter, with intense firefights strewn throughout dark, foreboding environments brought to life with some of the best lighting I've ever seen. The amazing script also deserves a mention, with its great pacing and mysterious plot points pulling the player along each level, hungry for more information so as to figure out what the hell is going on. By the time you see the credits, the game is resolved, but not the story. With an ending that gives the player an infinite amount of possibilities, this game begs everyone who plays it to find someone else and discuss every single moment of it. It's funny how a game with no multiplayer can bring so many people together.

4) Battlefield: Bad Company 2

DICE may not have invented the online multiplayer shooter (that award goes to id...who did everything first), but it was the first to perfect it. Over the years, they've honed their craft to give us the best First-Person Shooter franchise (called Battlefield) on PC. Not content to let the other dogs lead the pack, they burst forth onto home consoles everywhere with 2008's Battlefield: Bad Company. Sure, there were those other Battlefield games, but they were just ports. No, BC had something to set itself apart: a great single-player campaign. But they weren't content to just do that, no, they built another game, this time making sure the multiplayer (of which they are famous for) was just as good as the single-player. MW2 may still have more players, but everyone knows where to go to if they actually want team-based multiplayer. Even though the multiplayer is incredibly fun, the campaign has been improved in almost every way. Foregoing the open environments in favor of a linear (but still pretty huge) path, DICE created another funny adventure for B-company with memorable moments thrown about, finally ending with a leap out of an airplane and a pistol separating a peaceful end, or a war infused future. Yet, even when all goes according to plan, there's still something that'll pull B-company back into the fray, with an ending that teases about what BC3 will contain.

3) God of War III

Sony Santa Monica took the title of best action developer from both Capcom and Team Ninja back in 2005 when they released a little game called God of War onto the PS2. While they toiled away over the years with the final installment in their epic trilogy, their crown was stolen from them and passed amongst pretenders vying for the throne. After years of blood, sweat, and tears poured into this game (at least I'm pretty sure that's what happens during development) God of War III released, defying all thoughts of what could be done in a video game and breaking all limitations past consoles have given them. It is a technical marvel, and the gameplay isn't half bad. While the story might not be as good as the first one (but let's be honest, I don't think any action game will ever be), it nonetheless concludes SSM's story of Kratos and his drive for vengeance. With the tale of a mad Spartan behind us, it is hard to know what comes next, but be certain of this: there will never be a character as *** as Kratos.

2) Red Dead Redemption

Even though Rockstar didn't actually make the original Red Dead Revolver (they purchased it from Capcom), I'm glad they waited until now to make it their own. Basically a new IP, Rockstar treated it as such, infusing everything they know about video games and making the Western genre just as good (if not better) in video game form than in movie form. Putting the open world exploration of Grand Theft Auto into a Western might sound good, but leave it to those British dudes who started an American studio to make it fantastic. With a more refined aiming system than in GTAIV, a beautiful world set in the US and Mexico, the best horseback riding in all of video games (I know it doesn't sound like much, but trust me, you notice), and a story worthy of many awards, Red Dead Redemption will undoubtedly receive many Game of the Year awards.

1) Mass Effect 2

Back in 2007, Bioware set the standard for amazing storytelling for console RPGs when they released Mass Effect for the Xbox 360 to critical acclaim and great sales. But even now, with Mass Effect 2 released early in the year, the first game seems like child's play. Incorporating every choice the player made in the first game, Mass Effect 2 improves in every aspect. The game is more of a shooter than a RPG, but maybe that's for the better, because the battles are a helluva lot more fun than the first one. Where before you had to wait about 20 minutes for your weapon to cool down, all you need now are heat venting clips (ammo in non-nerd language) which gives the game a more intense feel in the middle of a fight, instead of having the feel of slowly dripping molasses. Even more impressive than that is the way Bioware actually made me care about the crew of the Normandy, making me build relationships with every single one and making sure no one died in the end. You become attached to these characters when you learn more about them and their stories, their tormented pasts, their drive to fight. Bioware created the newest sci-fi universe for nerds everywhere back in 07, and the sequel just makes it better. Mass Effect 2 is my Game Of The Year (So Far), and in a few more years, I'll probably be saying the same thing about Mass Effect 3.

Beyond A Masterpiece

In case you have been living under a rock in a cave in the Himalayas, then you know that today was the day that Pixar released their newest uber-hit, Toy Story 3. I am lucky to report that it is indeed all we have been hoping for, and then some.

I went into the theater expecting Toy Story 3 to be excellent in all aspects. Let me just say that it has surpassed even my expectations. This is the funniest movie Pixar has done (I was laughing at almost every scene, as was the rest of the theater), it is the most serious of all their films (which actually added to its hilarity), and it is also one of the most touching films ever (yes, even more so than WALL-E and Up).

I'm going to keep this short since chances are you have already purchased multiple tickets to what will be the movie of the year (until Inception comes out that is, in which case they will be duking it out for the rest of the year), and if you even have a fleeting interest in movies or animation, you will have no doubt heard about this hidden gem. If you had any reason not to see this movie, let me just say that you should forget them and just pay the price for admission. If anything, you'll feel as if you under-payed.

A New Console Brings New Experiences

Two days ago I did the most horrible thing I could: I bought a Xbox 360.

Before all of you Sony faithful go yelling at me, I just want you to know that I am still with Sony (they still have more and better exclusives), and the only reason I (or really, my brother) got a 360 is just for the exclusives that we couldn't play on our PS3, like Mass Effect. Since we don't have a powerful PC (yet) to play most of the "exclusives" that appear on Microsoft's home console, we were left with no choice but to buy one in order to experience the games that only the 360 can...ahem, handle.

It all happened Sunday. We bought the Elite bundle that comes with Halo 3: ODST and Forza 3, so that's two games off my list (yes, I have a list. Don't we all?) as well as two more controllers (there are three of us), and later that day we went back to purchase Left 4 Dead 2 and the original Mass Effect. I only really wanted to play Mass Effect, but getting three other great games wasn't too bad.

Starting the system up wasn't very hard (except for my brother, which ensued with hilarious cursing and anger), and overall didn't really irritate me. Joining LIVE on the other hand proved difficult for me and my second oldest brother because for some reason it wouldn't register our e-mails. Also, the Avatars suck. A lot. But you knew that already.

Now, on to the best part: the games. So far my game collection rises to a staggering total of 4 (see above if you really care). The only game I haven't played is Forza 3, so I'll just make some quick comments for the other 3 based on what I've played so far:

Halo 3: ODST - Feels like every other Halo. That is, it's whole lot of simple fun. I see myself spending a lot of time in Firefight.
Left 4 Dead 2 - Frantic and chaotic. This is nothing like what I imagined the zombie apocalypse would be, but it's everything I hoped for in a video game. Once I finally get LIVE I'll probably be spending my most time with this one, but for now nothing beats screaming in the ear of my brother a foot away about how he totally didn't protect me against that Hunter.
Mass Effect - I knew Bioware had created an instant classic, but it wasn't until I reached the Citadel that I realized how great this game really is. The gunplay, inventory, and combat menu leave something to be desired (as well as the MAKO controls, but I think all of this has been fixed in Mass Effect 2, and by "fixed" I mean "taken out"), but the dialogue and story so far has piqued my interest. The bad thing is that I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to set aside an entire day just to read about the ME Universe in order to get a handle on things. The Codex is a life saver. So far (other than Bioshock) this is my favorite 360 title.

Even though I don't like the idea of having to pay to play online and the fact that I'm going to have to pay even more to get another cable just to connect it to my kick-ass sound system, I still like it and have come to hate it a lot less. Now all I need to do is get all of the games I've been waiting years to play and I'll be set. Any recommendations? I'd prefer games that support up to 3 player co-op, but anything good I'll give a look.

After 5 years, I can finally say that I own all of the next-gen systems, and *** does it feel good.

We Spartans Stand Tall

Before you read this, I want you to know that this will have many spoilers about God of War III. I will summarize the story of God of War III, as well as theorize what the next step of the God of War franchise Sony Santa Monica could take.

Before I get into what SSM's DLC could be (well, it could be DLC), let me just refresh your memories about GoWIII's story for those who have already forgotten it. Or, you could just skip to the third page if you want to know what I (as well as most of the internets) think the DLC could be about.

!!!!!-----SPOILER ALERT-----!!!!![PageBreak]

As everyone in the gaming world knows by now, the beginning of GoWIII begins with Kratos riding Gaia to the top of Mt. Olympus to kill Zeus. They get attacked by Poseidon, and of course, Kratos begins to exact his special brand of murderous chain wielding revenge. After killing Poseidon (from the victim's eyes no less), Kratos and Gaia continue up the mountain where they face Zeus and proceed to get lightning bolted into Hell. (A quick side note: for those who have the God of War III issue of Game Informer back in 2009, if you read page 46, paragraph 4, director Stig Asmussen actually told everyone that this would happen) Kratos loses all of his powers while he takes a swim in the River Styx, and talks to Athena, whose noble sacrifice has transformed her into some kind of super ghost. After giving Kratos the Chains of Exile (which I'm assuming is better than the Blades of Athena, or else she wouldn't have taken them), he journeys through Hell and meets Hephaestus who tells him that the key to Zeus's power is called the Flame of Olympus. Kratos leaves and kills Hades by ripping out and absorbing his soul. Kratos then swims the River Styx (unharmed) and ascends to the City of Olympia, where he kills Helios and (presumably) Gaia. After ripping off the head of Helios, Kratos proceeds to the Flame of Olympus and sees Pandora's Box lying within.

After being unable to do anything to retrieve the box (all who touch the Flame, mortal or god, will die), he follows Hermes, who has been taunting him, and kills him by cutting his legs off and letting him bleed to death. Kratos then makes his way to the Muses, who bring up the Flame and allows Kratos to drop the gate barring his way to the Flame. Unfortunately, the Judges won't let him drop the gate, so Kratos leaves. He meets Hera and Hercules and kills the latter using his own Namean Cestus (also known as the Cestus Gauntlets), and after taking a short swim, ascends into Poseidon's Chamber (that dude you killed...the god...the first one). After using his buxom mistress as a "door stopper", he ends up in Aphrodite's bedroom. Kratos "pleasures" her and exits into the Forge, where Hephaestus awaits. He tells Kratos that Pandora is the key to the Flames of Olympus and he needs to retrieve a certain stone so that he can make a weapon. Kratos goes through a gate and into the Pits of Tartarus, where an old friend greets Kratos.

After a lengthy (and totally awesome) fight with Cronos, Kratos jabs the Blade of Olympus into his forhead, but not before being swallowed and taking the Stone from inside him (I might be spit-balling here, but I believe the Stone is the same one his mother Rhea used to fool Cronos into thinking he swallowed his son, Zeus). Kratos hands the stone to Hephaestus who then uses it to craft him a weapon. However, he quickly betrays him and is dealt a swift justice in the form of a spike-like thing to his torso. Kratos then proceeds through Aphrodite's bedroom and uses his new electric weapon to power the mechanisms that will allow him passage to the Olympus Garden.

After killing Hera and solving the puzzle of the M.C. Escher Garden, Kratos ends up in the newly formed Labyrinth. He fights his way through and saves Pandora. He then falls back into Hell and destroys the Judge bastards holding down the Flame of Olympus. Kratos flies back to the Labyrinth and climbs the Chains to the top. He then lifts the gate and simultaneously brings up Pandora. They are then stopped by Zeus and after a cool side-scrolling-esque fight, Pandora jumps into the Flame, destroying herself and the Flame and allowing Kratos to open the Box. After discovering that the Box is empty, Kratos follows Zeus into the rotunda where he was first lightning bolted into Hell. Then, Gaia makes an unexpected return and crushes the rotunda. Kratos and Zeus jump into Gaia, and fight around her heart. Kratos stabs Zeus and the heart of Gaia with the Blade of Olympus, killing both of them. He awakens on Mt. Olympus and walk towards the body of Zeus, and pulls out the Blade. Zeus then turns into some kind of cloud of smoke and forces Kratos into his own mind...or something like that. Kratos forgives himself for what he has done (murdered his family, killed Athena), and returns to the outside and beats the hell out of Zeus. Kratos then realizes that his revenge is over and kills himself with the Blade. His body lies on Mt. Olympus, surrounded by a pool of his own blood.

At the end of the credits, a cutscene shows a trail of blood leading from Kratos's initial suicide spot leading to the side of a cliff.

<img src="http://www.gameinformer.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=272332" width="1" "perfect games", and today I'm going to do the same for a few more. Today's batch of sacred cows will include my personal favorite game, Bioshock, as well as (the way too over-hyped) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the "feels-exactly-like-Ocarina" Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and the "revolutionary" Resident Evil 4.
For the past week I have been playing my friend's copy of Demon's Souls (don't worry, he has Final Fantasy XIII to tide him over), and I have come to realize one thing: I love/hate this game.

Why the split between my feelings about DS? Because I can't choose which one it is. At times I love the graphics, sound, designs, and combat. At other times I hate the ludicrous difficulty, often touchy camera, and the fact that I can't upgrade my armor or a certain weapon that I found.

Now, I know that my hatred of the difficulty is ridiculous, that it was made with the idea that near unsurmountable challenges be around every corner, but sometimes it just gets, well, ridiculous. There are plenty of examples I could use, but I'll just let the players' experiences speak for themselves. Though the feeling of accomplishment is unlike any other.

The camera is one aspect that I won't get into. I've heard of Atlus' skill in game development, but that usually comes from the 3 people who have actually played their games. I have nothing to say about their camera work. Except that it sometimes gets in my way.

Now, I might seem like I'm being overly negative, but it is actually quite the opposite: this game is awesome. If you like slaying demons and monsters, but don't want to play a board game with a bunch of nerds, than this is as close as you can get. If you miss the good ol' days when every single game was either hard or harder, than this game is for you. If you like Atlus, than you've probably already bought it.

To end this short and pretty pointless post, I'm going to tell you a story of how I killed a dragon in the first world. Ahem: I shot it with arrows for 20 minutes.

Lists Will Live Forever, And I'm Fine With That

Over the years lists have been a great way to show your opinion in a quick and simple way. I am no stranger to these "lists": 13 of my 33 blog posts are lists. I'm also fairly sure lists outnumber all other blog posts on this site, but that's just a guess.

The one thing I like about lists is how they seem to divide everybody who reads it. There are those who mostly agree with the list (no one ever completely agrees), those who agree with some of the choices, those who agree with the choices but complain about their placement in comparison to the others, and those who think the creator of said list is a complete idiot who knows nothing about video games or lists or whatever is in this blasphemous list. And you know what? The ensuing aftermath of comments are usually hilarious, especially if it's filled with haters and/or trolls.

Lists are a great way to express opinion and to get comments about other possible entries, but it's just funny to see all of the comments about the people who disagree with your choices.

There's no real point to this blog post, just to encourage all who read this to continue making as many ridiculous lists as possible. Remember: there is always someone ready to disagree with you, you just have to give them a reason to.

Please GI, don't sue me.

Over the past months on this site, years as a gamer, and lifetime as a human, I've never been one to keep to myself when it comes to something I don't like. Last year I finally got a PS3 and entered the realm of next-gen gaming. Being such a huge fan of Game Informer and all things video games, I wanted to play every single game that they gave a 9 and above, and proceeded to do so. First there was Bioshock, then The Orange Box, then Oblivion, and so on. So when I went through all of my past issues of Game Informer to see what games are must plays, I saw one that I knew I couldn't miss.

It first appeared to me in the Ghostbusters issue, with that 10 staring at me, how could I not want it? They were comparing it to Bioshock, my favorite game of all time! Unfortunately, my brother had no money to buy it, so I thought I was never going to play "one of the best games of 2007". Luckily, my friend had Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and he said I could borrow it because he was too busy playing World At War. So I got home, eager to play one of the biggest games in all of history. I mean, it got a better score than TimeSplitters, so it had to be unforgettable, right? Wrong.

This game should never have gotten a 10. A 9.5 would've been acceptable, but not a 10. I played through the single player, and while it was everything everyone said it would be, there was one thing that brought it down, and ultimately pissed me off. For all of its technical wizardry and polished gameplay, Infinity Ward still couldn't overcome the stupidest decision ever: infinite spawns. Now, I love a challenge. I love the satisfaction of gunning down an entire squad with only 2 clips, or tossing a grenade mere seconds before it detonates while my health is in the crapper. But being forced to fight an unlimited amount of terrorists only to have them completely run out once I pass a certain point is complete BS. It is not realistic. It is not logical. It is not fun. I did love the end of Shock and Awe though. It was awesome.

Then I played the multiplayer. You know what's so bad about hype? It can also work against you. That's what happened when I played the multiplayer. I did good my first time playing it, but it felt so...bland. I was used to interesting looking shooters, like Team Fortress and TimeSplitters, so playing CoD4, where everything was either gray or brown-gray, made it feel like every other shooter out there. I read everywhere that CoD4's online was the greatest thing ever to happen to video games since 3D, and yet here I was, shooting generic players in a generic (albeit good) looking game with generic guns. The gameplay was tight, the map layouts were excellent, and the visuals were a feast for the eyes. The leveling system kinda felt flawed to me. Why should I have to use suckish weapons to earn more EXP? Why not reward me just for being good instead of rewarding me for using a weapon no one wants to use? But to all their own, I guess.

Call of Duty is the biggest example of when hype goes bad. Gamers, the press, and everyone else made the game seem like the second coming of Jesus, but in truth, it is as generic as can be. Now, I want to make two things perfectly clear: I enjoy playing Call of Duty and everyone has their own opinion. As noted above, I loved CoD4's single player, and I played a lot of WaW. My beef with CoD is that people just won't shut up about it. I know that's all you play, you're the 1,000,000th person to tell me. Please stop telling me. Please leave me alone. Please shut up. Call of Duty made me wary of all games, no matter the pedigree, and now I have an ounce of doubt for every game I want, just in case any of them pull a CoD. That is why I apparently "hate" CoD. Please stop complaining.

On The Seat: Luigi & Bowser

This week I'm going to be talking to Luigi about his recent brother's apprehension by the boys in blue and to their nemesis Bowser to get both sides of the case people are calling "the biggest case since the Final Fantasy fan murders".
BatmanPrime: It's good to have you here, Mr. Daddy.

Big Daddy: It's good to be here, Mr. Prime.

BatmanPrime: Can you tell me about your life before Bioshock?

Big Daddy: Hmm, where to begin? I was working at a [name withheld for legal reasons] for a while since I never passed high school. I was that guy in school who smoked all the time and was in his own band and who you knew would never amount to anything. I even got nicknames like "Hooky" - my teachers called me that for an entire year before everyone else realized it would work well with me since I was always in a scuba suit - and also...well, that's it actually. Pretty soon my girlfriend Rosie was sick of me coming home smelling like french fries and onions. So I took the initiative and auditioned for a part in an upcoming video game called Bioshock. I didn't know who was directing it, but the company in charge of it was called Irrational Games. I Wiki'ed them and was surprised to find out that an old friend of mine was in one of their past games. SHODAN never was big, even in school she was that computer nerd that the other nerds wouldn't even go out with. Guess she proved them wrong, eh? Well, actually not really, but you know what I mean. I got to know her a little after Rosie introduced us, but then she left for the east coast, determined to change her life. I was told that she got a part into a cult hit video game, but I never thought that I would someday be following her footsteps. [Laughs]

BP: So you auditioned and got the part. Was it easy?

BD: Are you kidding me? It was the hardest and scariest moment in my life! If I get in, I'm going to have to work to make my part feel alive and not disappoint these guys. If I fail, it's back to the fryer and to the stupid dollar menu. Do you know how many jackasses come to [name withheld for legal reasons] when I'm on the cashier? Way too many. And you know what's even worse? Almost all of them were hippies. *** hippies. They smelled like manure with more manure piled on top of it. Um, where was I?
