Lots of players love RPGs for the story, dude. Personally, it doesn't bother me so much if the story isn't as compelling as prior entries in a series, but I can understand those who are deeply disappointed. I'm playing XIII right now for the first time. Frankly, I've thought every FF title has had some zany and questionable story elements. What I love about XIII is that it was ballsy enough to try a bunch of new things that prior FFs didn't do. Whether they all work or not is one thing, but good on the team for trying new things. The story so far is clear cut (I'm 11 hours in), but not super compelling. I love the battle system. I'm surprised Reiner put that much stock in a Juba review, but that's neither here nor there...one person's opinion won't dissuade me from Final Fantasy. I'm excited for XIII-2, but if the story and character arcs aren't ok throughout, then they won't be listed among the classics.

Can you even remember what XI or XII were about... I sure as hell can't. XII was good for the new style of active RPG that they used and the side quests and graphics were good as well. Same as you said for XIII, and the Fighting is more turrible, yes that's a Sir Charles reference than XIII-2 to me, at least how you level up etc etc. Don't like the tamable monsters, reminds me of an old game where you could have like a million characters attached to you, Last Remnant maybe?
The real problems started when SquareSoft joined with Enix, think about it... Turrible ever since! If you don't believe me look it up yourselves. You will probably notice that you don't like Enix based games before the merger, looking into I think I could only recall one I cared for! This is the real problem so don't think that is getting fixed anytime soon. If not for my need to complete things I probably would have stopped playing XII-2 already. The story line is actually less annoying than it's original to be honest. It's like a lamer version of the game were you find out you are actually a video game character and not real... my bad I'm horrible at remembering names of games!

re: Turning My Back On Final Fantasy

Just the fact that we are hearing about the supposedly inevitable XIII-3 is disheartening. There should never be a third offshoot of a main FF game, even two is kind of pushing if for FF.

I bought 12 and its the first game I ever sold to gamestop some thing i've only ever done like three times in my life. didnt even finish it couldnt stomach it anymore. the japanesse have to stop this obsecion with adrogynous charecters and I dont think they are getting me back as a customer ever again. I dont see why people like the battle system for 13 I think its crazy that anybody does. I cant even look up to see the action cause im so busy picking attacks and chaging paradims how is that enjoyble. But to each their own, I reaaly hope that the string of dissapointing sales and reviews make them change their ways.

That being said, I agree. Traditionally the stock Square plot is the same each time. Evil empire, plucky youth etc. The strength hasn't been the overall plot but memorable and likable (or intentionally hate-able) characters. Celes and Locke, Cecil and Rosa and Rydia. These are what make the old games what they are. Or Kefka, the crazy ***. I feel that S.E. is losing that connection, and that is worse than the other flaws that keep showing up. (Such as linearity).

The weirdest part is, and you saw this with the last sequel they did for FF10, they keep making the sequels around the characters less people liked. It's strange and I don't think they're listening to their fanbase anymore.

Edit: And I love what others have mentioned in the comments so far that I hadn't thought about - the music. God the music of the old ones, the opera music in FF6 or Aeris' theme. I bought the soundtrack for FF6, FF7, and FF8. After those though it just..dropped. I dunno. It's rather sad.

re: Turning My Back On Final Fantasy

Wholeheartedly agree with this article. It's not just the Final Fantasy series though, it's the decline of the JRPG. Western RPG's have always focused more on the shiny graphics and action oriented combat, which is fun, but these games never have a story as strong and engrossing as old school JRPGs. Not sure why this is, maybe too much time spent in developing these other features and not story, or maybe action oriented games are just too fast to let you immerse in the story. Either way, I find myself remembering the classic old school JRPGs more often than I find myself looking forward to upcoming games.
