200,000 Gamerscore Is Within Reach

I stopped caring about my Xbox Live Gamerscore after I hit 100,000. At that point in time, the next milestone was obviously going to be 200,000 – a feat that would take me years to reach. I have the attention span of a fly, so there was no way I was going to stay engaged for multiple years to increase a number that has no meaning other than bragging rights. Years have passed since I hit 100,000, and my Gamerscore is now sitting at 195,149. That itch to reach the next milestone is back...to a degree. I find myself torn between playing the games I legitimately want to play and playing games that will give me the easiest achievements.

Since I've already bled the easiest achievement-dispensing games dry (Avatar, TMNT), I've decided to stay the course and devote my time to good games, like DmC: Devil May Cry and Dead Space 3. I don't know how long it will take me to rack up an additional 5,000 gamerscore, but this milestone is going to be reached with a game that I enjoy, or at the very least, feel I need to play.

What would you do if you were in my shoes? Also, have you been there? What embarrassing games have you finished to reach a Gamerscore goal? My lowest point: Finishing the awful Brave: A Warrior's Tale to get over 700 points. That feat took me an entire weekend.

  • i'm a PS3 player, but i must admit that i am not an achievement hunter. in theory, i feel like i would totally get into that, but some of the achievements keep you in games for so many extra hours/ days that i just have no interest. i'd rather enjoy every second with a game, as opposed to dragging my butt through it just to get an achievement (not to say some people don't enjoy playing for hours and hours and hours). it's the same reason i can't get into Skyrim or huge games like that. i dont have the attention span for 100+ hour games. although i'm trying to be better at taking my time getting through a game (i waltzed through ME1 at 25 hours, and was planning on continuing until i accidentally walked into the endgame). first game (after the ME trilogy) that i plan to take my time with is Kingdoms of Amalur. loved it the first five hours, but then got overwhelmed knowing how much content was to come. i'm going to give it a second go.
  • I have never personally been in your situation. However, my advice is to keep sticking with the good games. Games are meant to be enjoyed, and why play them if you are not having fun?

  • If I was in your position, I would find the one achievement that has been staring you in the face for months, that you weren't sure if you wanted to dedicate the time to get. The harder the final achievement is to get, the more satisfying the bleep that gets you over the 200k barrier will be. Until you get within reach of that moment, just play the games you want to play.
  • I would imagine it's much easier to gain lots of points being able to checkout any game from the vault. I would love to be able to do that....
  • Congratulations on all the achievements, but if I were you, I would stick to games you really want to play (unless, of course, you find five easy games with 1000 points- that might change things).

  • I'm about to hit 135,000 myself. Unlike most gamerscore hunters though, I won't play games that I have no interest in just for achievements.

Games have to at least interest me a bit for me to play them. So you'll never see my play games like Avatar the Last Airbender, as they don't interest me.

Though I am playing Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer atm, it's one of those games I rented to see if it was really that bad, so far it's not great.
  • Wow congrats! I'm just past the 50,000 mark, and all of that is from games that I like, stay the course Reiner and enjoy your gamerscore games!

  • If I were you I would wait until I needed around 500 points left, maybe slightly more. Then turn off all achievement notifications. Then set aside 7 or 8 games of varying quality that you haven't played and spend less than an hour with each of them.

Now you look in your list and find out which game it was that put you over 200,000 by looking at the time stamps. You can gather some friends and place some bets on which game it was that put you over.
  • I personally would never go out of my way to play crappy games for the sake of getting achievements, but I absolutely LOVE getting them in titles that I really love. I hope you get to 200,000 soon!
  • It's a tough spot for sure. As a trophy hunter use to similar conundrums, I say that you should definitely keep doing what makes you happy and play the games you enjoy the most. It's useless to fret about, like you say, a number that only has meaning as far as bragging rights. Still. . . if you're that close, you should try and go for it, with CONDITIONS. I.E you should at least limit yourself to playing only tolerable games. It's not worth it to play absolutely terrible games. 5,000 isn't bad, so I betcha you can do it before the 720 comes out. GO REINER!!!

  • As an ex trophy hunter myself, you should play awesome games. But you should also squeeze in terrible ones. You should try that Green Lantern game. It's actually not terrible, and fairly easy. Or dare I say, Hannah Montana: The Movie?
  • I am a little over 87,000 gamerscore, however I dont play games just for achievements like avatar or tmnt. I only go for 100% in the games I enjoy. Currently I have around 25 - 30 completed 100% and far more that need 1 or 2, which bothers me but some of those are no longer possible to achieve.

  • My gamerscore is pretty low, mainly because I haven't had an Xbox for very long. Most of my time has went into collecting trophies, which I've been doing since Bioshock released on PS3. 33 platinum trophies later, I wonder if it's worth it. But at the same time, I don't see myself stopping any time soon lol.

  • Sadly i do not have the same expierience as you. But i have to disagree with the part about gamerscore being useless, Microsoft is now offering prizes like free membership and Micorosft Points if you have a certain gamerscore, 100 thousand being the highest.
  • wow just wow

  • I thought I had a pretty good Gamerscore, until I realized that the cumulative potential point total of all the games I've played don't even add up to 200,000.

  • lets go reiner lets go! *clap* *clap*

  • I wish my Gamerscore could reach those heights, I feel like I'm missing out on so much this gen because I'm a broke college student, Oh well, maybe next gen.

  • Having 2 jobs keeps my gamerscore kinda low..... oh well.

  • You need to play some bad games every once in a while to remember what makes good games good. Maybe, as a reviewer, you should just play some bad games for the easy gamerscore.

BTW, I just reached 40,000 while playing DmC and didn't even notice until I'd beaten DMD mode and realized I was more than 200 gamerscore over the milestone. It's a much better feeling when you notice the milestone pales in comparison to playing such a great game as opposed to making it the focus.
