Watch Star Trek Into Darkness' Teaser Trailer

I'm a big fan of J.J. Abrams' new direction for Star Trek. Abrams and the Bad Robot crew found a way to preserve this universe's rich lore, and also give it a fresh start. I hope Disney and LucasFilm find a similar approach for the new Star Wars films. I've read many of the Expanded Universe novels, and would hate to think that these stories don't matter. Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire trilogy is one of the best Star Wars stories to date.

Star Trek Into Darkness' teaser trailer shows plenty of eye-grabbing shots, but doesn't give away too many story details. The biggest reveal is a new bad guy (Benedict Cumberbatch) returning for vengeance. It smacks of the Khan storyline, but lots of rumors seem to indicate it might be the original series character Gary Mitchell. The film hits theaters on May 17, 2013. Check it out, and let me know what you think in the comments section below.

This looks awesome. Thanks for posting, Andrew. Mitchell is a plausible theory (though there is at least one incongruity), and the new female crewmember shown here matches in appearance (from what I remember) Dr. Dehner from that episode. However, I did find other clues that hint of another possible plot, involving a Dr. Bendes Ketteract. I think either would be interesting concepts worth exploring. ; ) Bottom line: Can't wait! Longtime fan, and love the Abrams reboot.

  • I must say, this looks even less Star Trek than the first Abrams' movie. Not necessarily a bad thing, as the last Star Trek was pretty good, but neither of them really feel like Star Trek. Let's hope they do a better job with the villain this time.
  • I don't think I would have seen this trailer otherwise. Thanks Reiner!

  • you guys should watch the japanese trailer! trust me there's a major story hint that's not in the regular one

  • I really liked this trailer! Futuristic San Fran gave me a Mass Effect vibe.

  • So many redshirts are going to die

  • I've been waiting too long for a sequel!

  • Haha Star Trek still can't get rid of Star Wars even for it's own trailer announce.

  • Gary Mitchell would be an excellent choice for villian. I always liked his creepy vibe. Also, yeah, you do need to watch the Japanese version too. It's slightly different towards the end. http://youtu.be/BrHlQUXFzfw

  • Benedict Cumberbatch is a perfect choice to play the villain. He has such a creepy and powerful screen presence. Anyone that hasn't seen him in the British T.V. series Sherlock needs to go watch that asap. Very excited for this sequel.
  • Wow, thanks for sharing this Reiner. Looks cool so far.

  • Loved the first one, and I can't wait for this one.

  • Thus looks awesome. Hope it's as good as the last one.

  • I'm a HUGE trekkie -- see my profile pic -- and I haven't been as excited to learn details about a new Trek movie since First Contact.  Out of the two major rumors concerning villains, so far I tend to lend credence to the Gary Mitchell rumor over Khan, but there's also the Japanese trailer to consider with a major call back to The Wrath of Khan.

As far as the blonde science/medical officer is concerned, she could easily fit into either scenario if she's a pre-existing character.  She could be Doctor Dehner from the same episode as Gary Mitchell (and given the "Into Darkness" subtitle, the plot of going past the galactic barrier from that episode could easily tie into that).  Or, she could be Carol Marcus from The Wrath of Khan, and mother of Kirk's ill-fated son.

I'm beyond excited for this movie to come out! lol

  • Wow..

  • I am excited.  Abram showed an exceptional amount of balls in wiping out Vulcan in the first movie; while maintaing the Star Trak cannon by way of an alternate univers.  This was way beyond clever. I really hope that Edge of Darkness continues this trend as well as show us what an Abrams Klingon looks like. This is the best retelling of a franchise ever.

  • Given the fact that this all within the same time line. It seems that the events are happening before they happened in the original show.

    Just my opinion

  • Didn't realize this trailer was out yet, thanks Reiner! Film looks entertaining, although it seems like they are 2 for 2 with plots on revenge. I hope this isn't the case and I'm delightfully surprised.
