Superman Redesigned, Finally Underwear Free

by Andrew Reiner on Aug 25, 2011 at 05:27 AM

The first shot from Zack Snyder's upcoming Man of Steel film (above) shows a traditional looking Superman costume. I didn't blink an eye at it. If anything, I thought actor Henry Cavill (The Tudors) looked like a great choice for the role. Hardcore Superman fans, on the other hand, wondered why his crotch was blanketed in thick shadow. This seriously became a major talking point in comic book forums. Some people believed that Zack Snyder was ditching the red underwear which Superman always stupidly wore over his pants. Others believed that he would be wearing a WayneTech utility belt – perhaps hinting at a future World's Finest crossover.

On an unofficial Man of Steel Facebook page, spy shots from the set of the film reveal that Zack Snyder may have been hiding something after all. The Superman costume featured in this film is underpants free. In my opinion, this is a look that should have happened decades ago. To no surprise whatsoever, fans are irate. What do you think?

And Superman's look isn't just changing in the movies. DC Comics' new universe, which launches next week, is going even further with the concept of redesigning this iconic figure. He now wears jeans, perhaps Wranglers given his farm upbringing. He also would appear to have powered armor. We'll see how long these looks last.
