Update: My 1000 Club – Mass Effect 3

I want to clarify this right away: I’m not an achievement junkie. I don’t get an adrenaline rush from the distinctive bloop that accompanies the “achievement unlocked” message, and I don’t care about my gamerscore. Given those facts, it may seem strange that I have gone to absurd lengths to get every achievement in a small handful of games. These elite titles are the members of my 1000 Club.

Achievements aren’t meaningless for gamers like me. I have been known to obsessively collect knick-knacks, grind levels, and accrue percentage points toward total completion. I may not care about the gamerscore side of the equation, but I’m always looking for fresh goals and objectives that will give me an excuse to spend more time with awesome games. Getting all 1000/1000 points is mainly of symbolic importance; by getting every achievement, you have likely seen almost everything that the game has to offer…or at least the parts of the experience that the developer thought were important.

Doing this with every title I play would just make gaming feel like a chore. The members of my 1000 Club are the standouts that, for various reasons, inspired such obsessive loyalty from me that I was compelled to explore their every nook and cranny. Those things will be different for each gamer, so what makes you decide to induct a game in your 1000 Club?

Mass Effect 3 (Update: 4/24/12)

I wasn't sure if I was going to shoot for the full 1000 points in Mass Effect 3, even though I did for series' two installments. The game has a multiplayer-only achievement, which I normally have no interest in. However, I got completely hooked on ME 3's multiplayer mode, so a lot of achievements that would have required tons of single-player came naturally during the course of my online matches. Things like Pyromaniac (set 100 enemies on fire) and Overload Specialist (overload 100 shields) are easy to get with the waves of multiplayer enemies, and the ease of switching classes means that you don't need to do several full playthroughs of the campaign as different characters. As usual, beating the game on Insanity was the most challenging achievement, though I found it far more manageable than it was in Mass Effect 2. The only fight that really gave me trouble was the final duel with Kai Leng. I certainly died in other encounters, but none of them required nearly the number of retries as that one. The relative ease of the Insanity achievement has a lot to do with better design, but also with the weapon that comes with the From Ashes DLC, the particle rifle. It uses a cooldown system (like ME 1) rather than the limited ammunition of ME 2 and 3, so I didn't have to scrounge for thermal clips during the tough fights.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Update: 2/27/12)

After I finished Final Fantasy XIII-2 for review, I couldn't wait to start playing again. I know that may sound strange (especially considering my complaints in the review), but I mean it when I say it's one of my favorite RPGs in some ways (read: not the story). I didn't have a guide or anything when I played it the first time, so I was flying blind. However, I love optimization and being a completionist, so I was determined to do everything right on my second playthrough. Monster infusion, character development, fragment collection – I did it all, and the game has some great post-game rewards for people who keep playing. The achievements aren't really difficult, but they are time-intensive. For instance, you need to kill every monster in the game, including the high-end superbosses. You also need to spend way too much time (like, hours) with the truly awful slot machine minigame in the casino. My favorite part of the process was the Paradox Endings. These non-canonical "what-if" endings are reminiscent of those in the classic Chrono Trigger. Once you beat the game, you can go back to fight certain bosses that were previously undefeatable, and your reward is a brief scene outlining the (usually catastrophic) consequences. I just wish there were more than eight of them. Another highlight of the second playthrough is that because I already knew how terrible the story was going to be, I had no expectations, and had a much easier time ignoring it and focusing on the awesome mechanics. I hope they don't change to much on the gameplay front if/when another sequel comes out.

Saints Row: The Third (Update: 01/23/12)

I was having such a blast with Saints Row: The Third that I was already most of the way done with the achievements by the time I decided to shoot for the full 1000 points. As you progress through the game, you constantly see updates about your progress toward various challenges and achievements, giving you the sense that you're making headway right from the start, and most of the things are fun to do anyway. For instance, I don't need any extra incentive to nail enemies in the nuts or jump into cars Dukes of Hazzard-style; I'm just going to do that for the fun of it. Getting every achievement isn't all fun, though, since a few of them are poorly explained or designed. Taunting gang members is a part of two achievements, but it's never clearly explained that it needs to be done to non-hostile gang members -- taunting in combat doesn't count. The worst achievement of the lot is the one for doing all of the vehicle thefts. These are the weakest tasks you can do in the whole game, since they just involve picking up a vehicle and then driving across town to drop it off. The catch is that you need to pick up a specific target vehicle; if the job requires you to steal a cement mixer, you can't just take any cement mixer. You need to grab it from the designated area on the other side of the city. I'm complaining now because the vehicle thefts were the last thing I did, but for the other 45 hours I spent in Saints Row: The Third, I had a fantastic time. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a fourth.

  • I have to say I can forgive you for the Avatar because of the sheer awesomeness of Bully being on there. I have to say that that is one of my favorite games even though I hardly have any achievements in it. My friend is also trying to get the 1000 mark in Bioshock and just needs to get two more achievements until he reaches it. I don't think I would be able to do that for the sole reason that I have to take so many pictures, but eventually I might max out a game willingly.

  • Would you go for a game that includes multiplayer in your 1000 club?

Halo 3 is your best bet!

  • ACII for me.

  • Here's my 1000/1000 club: _________ Pretty epic, eh??? Actually, I'm working on getting Left 4 Dead 2 to a full 1000 right now. Those dang expert campaigns just get me though!

The problem with multiplayer achievements is that there are some people who will focus solely on getting them instead of doing what it best for their team. When it comes to achievements, I tend to focus on the single-player stuff, because then I just take care of business at my own pace.
  • That's true Joe. I am in the shameful club of cheating for Halo 3, but I did get the overkill achievement and spartan laser one on my own.

My 1000/1000 Club are as followed.

    Call of Duty 4:

An amazing game, but I can't tell you how many times I spent putting into that Mile High Club achievement, especially when you beat it after 50 tries and your brother comes in and forces you to shoot someone.

    Assassin's Creed 2:

An amazing game that I was glad to get all the achievements for. Fairly easy except for the feathers, started to use a guide after I found a little over half on my own.

    Modern Warfare 2:

Just finished getting the rest last weekend and let me tell you the Spec-Ops mission Snatch and Grab is the gayest one ever, I hated that one to no end. Still I did it and am glad I did, very hard, but fun. Campaign was well worth it also, even though veteran was slightly easier this time around, (maybe because I did it for the past two COD games)

Call of Duty World at War..... Kind of:

Technically I got all the achievements for this one except for the one for getting to tenth prestige, but other then that all of them are done, oh and for a few DLC ones. So I kind of count this, if it wasn't for the 10th prestige one.

Those are the ones that I finished, excluding WaW, and I'm proud of it.

I have roughly ten times the Achievements, but far less in the 1,000 club.
  • I got all of Bioshocks achievements, and all of Oblivions. Im really close to maxing out Fallout 3, but the ones I have left are, for the most part, "get to level so an so". I dont particularly want to go back and do that again right now, even though I loved the game. I think Bioshock did achievements perfectly. I actually enjoyed hunting em all down.

  • "Everyone is doing it" is not an excuse

  • Staff
@TheFightingLyon Actually, it is an excuse. Just a poor one.
  • I don't see Street Fighter IV here. So your efforts mean nothing. NOTHING I SAY!!!

  • I was proudest of maxing Fallout3, then the expansions came out and messed that up... oh well I'll get back to the DLC one of these days. It does annoy me a bit that DLC messes up your "completed" titles, whether or not you get the DLC (if you're online that is). Same thing happened with Borderlands... *** Moxxi!

Still have Fight Night round 3 completed (no real sense of victory there, as you get all the chievos before the *** season is even over :P ); Civ Rev, Bully and Pac-Man C.E. I actually have some pride in. I guess Pac wasn't all that hard, but it was fun.

  • my 1000 club: Halo 3, Borderlands, Fallout 3.

on PSN i completed LittleBigPlanet as well.

  • i have zero in the 1000 club.

  • I AM DEFINITELY AN ACHIEVEMENT AND TROPHY WHORE, BUT I DON'T CROSS THAT LINE WHERE GETTING TROPHIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS BECOMES A CHORE..I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT SOME GAMES ARE FUN TO GET ALL THE ACHIEVEMENTS FOR..EX: COD4 AND TRIALS HD..TRIALS HD BEING THE HARDEST ACHIEVEMENTS TO GET, ESPECIALLY BEFORE THE UPDATE
  • My 1000 Club is Halo 3, L4D, Fight Night Round 3, Halo:ODST, and Oblivion. Also, besides Multiplayer, all I have to do on Uncharted 2 is find like three more treasures for my platinum. AND... I don't go for the 1000 mark unless I ABSOLUTELY love the game. All the games I have it on have over 150 hours put into them.

  • I just recently got addicted to Acheivments.  I found myself picking up old games just to get them.  And to think, I traded in so many titles before farming all the acheivements I had the patience to get!

  • I also got all the achievements for Oblivion and Assassin's Creed II. I'm working on getting all of the 'chievos for Mass Effect and Borderlands now. I may also go back and get the Assassin's Creed I achievements, I'm at 915.

  • Staff
Do any of you ever feel the same inclination to max out PS3 trophies? I know they're almost functionally identical, but I just can't make myself care about trophies the way I care about achievements.
  • AC I and II, Borderlands, Oblivion, Gun, Batman: Arkham Asylum,

odren Warfare 2, Fight Night Round 3, and Battlefield 1943.
