Why Haven't You Seen MacGruber Yet?

by Dan Ryckert on Jul 26, 2013 at 09:11 AM

Ever since its 2010 release, I've screamed to anyone that would listen about how hilarious MacGruber is. I've always understood the skepticism...it's based on an SNL sketch, after all, and that tends to be bad news for any movie that isn't called Wayne's World. Somehow, I managed to convince a group of Game Informer editors and friends to watch it with me, and they reacted exactly how I expected.

Tim was a fan right away, and there was a constant stream of laughter throughout from Bryan Vore, Jeff Cork, Ben Hanson, and more. Hell, even Senior Stick-In-The-Mud Editor Joe Juba admits to liking it.

Looking past the "it's an SNL movie" skepticism, you can see that there's a lot of talent involved. Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillipe, and Powers Boothe all play their roles perfectly, and Fat Val Kilmer is awesome as the villain.

The movie's aggressive stupidity is matched only be the cleverness of its writing. The Lonely Island's Jorma Taccone directed and co-wrote the movie, and fans of SNL's digital shorts from the mid-to-late 2000s will likely appreciate the humor. It's also obvious that the team behind this movie have seen a plethora of 80s action movies, as MacGruber nails all the cliches perfectly.

I'm not gonna discuss any specific scenes or jokes here, as you should just watch the movie. Trust me on this one.
