Reviews Archive: It's a wrap

Update: 01/07/10

Added reviews from year 2005 (except June 05, couldn't find original document). My original plan was to work my way down to the November 2000 issue, however, due the lack of traffic (less than 500 unique visitors since reviews feature were added), I've decided to stop adding more reviews to the archive as there is not enough demand. I will continue to update the archive as new reviews come in on a monthly basis.

From now on, everyone will have access to all available reviews because there were only a dozen or so visitors who were actual subscribers.

Since this is will the last blog update, you may want to bookmark the following link asthis post will get buried in a few days along with other old blog posts. It will take you straight to the archive.

Off to work on another project!

Update: 12/23/2009 - 10:00am

Non-subscribers will now have access to all reviews as well for the rest of the year. Cheers.

Update: 12/22/2009 - 7:30pm

There is an iframe rendering bug with Internet explorer when you try to click on the review text links, as a workaround, you will have to set your browser to allow pop-up links from gameinformer.com.

Update: 12/22/2009

A few weeks ago, some readers from Site Feedback wanted to know if there is anyway to find out review scores from past issues. Making the scores available online was a simple task, so I had an online edition of the review archive up and running in no time.

However, wouldn't it be nice if, in addition to seeing the scores, you can read the reviews as well?

If you remembered my post in the "older reviews" thread, I wrote that I will try to make reviews text from the current gen systems available online. Well, it took ALOT of effort, but I managed to get a ton of reviews out before the holiday break.

Everyone can use the online reviews archive as a launch pad to view the 400+ reviews that is currently available at gameinformer.com

In addition to the 400+ online reviews, magazine subscribers have access to an additional 1000+ reviews, going all the way back to the November 2005 issue of Game Informer.

Hopefully we can hire a few interns and start porting all these reviews to the site so readers can submit their own reviews for the games.

Due to the massive amount of data needed to be imported, please give it 5 to 10 seconds while the flash app process the data.

You can sort and search the archive by title, issue, platform or score. The search engine uses regular expressions, so you can filter your list anyway you like, here a some examples:

1. To display only games with scores 8 and above, in the score filter box, type in "^10|^[8-9]"  (no quotes).

2. To display only games from the 360 in the 2009, type in "360" on the platform filter box, type in "2009" on the issue box.

3. To display all mario and sonic games, type in "mario|sonic" in the game title filter box.

To Update your search, please press the "Enter" key or the "Tab" key.

Note: Because the conversion process involves lots of copy and pasting, there are bound to be dead links or conversion errors, please comment below if you find any, thanks.

Happy Holidays.

  • This is a nice add.  Thanks for making it available.

  • Awesome! I have been wanting this for a long time. Is there any chance you could add scores from pre-2000 issues?

  • Aw, i wanted to read the review for Disney Extreme Skate Adventure (which got a 0.75 XD)

ah well, it's still cool that we can now see all the scores since 2000

  • Excellent. This should work fairly well while we wait for you guys to get all the full reviews back online.

  • OK, sorry for the double post, but I have to ask if this is true: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for Wii got a 10?!?

  • Staff

Disney Extreme Skate Adventure actually recieved a 7.75, I have to check the master archive to see if the score was enter incorrectly or if the flash app's import function is at fault when I get to work.

Will add more scores tomorrow, stay tune.

  • what a cool idea!

  • Sweet. Now all we have to do is just wait a little while, and hopefully we'll have all the reviews back on the site. GI wins again!

    @Mr.SmashterMeister

yeah, they gave it a 10 and gave it GOTY for 2006

  • Thanks, this makes it much easier to get the reviews.  Nice work.

  • Wow.  I didn't know you gave Wind Waker a 10.  I think I was even a subscriber then too.  Hopefully you can convince the powers that be that this application needs to be added to the site as a regular feature.

  • Man I wish this worked on the Wii

  • Staff

I believe Wii still supports only Flash 7, perhaps I can downgrade the code to Actionscript 2.0 from 3.0, stay tune.

    @icecap12

That is one thing that cannot be done, the best I can do is turn this into a static page like the Vault feature , but you still cannot access the page via the main navigation menus because there is no permanent link. And the worst thing about static pages is that they cannot track web traffic.

  • How did Extreme Bullrider and Professional Bull Rider get a 0.8 and 0.9, respectively?

  • I also like how when I typed in "zelda", only one game was below 9. Also, I hate how Ocarina of Time isn't 10

  • I didn't know there were 2 Super Metroid games with 2 different scores on the same system 5 years apart.

  • The same applies to Kirby's Dream Course.

  • great add-on..i would hope you get payed for this or something lol..

  • Staff

Get payed? LOL, no bonus for extra credit at work.

There are some duplicate games because the master archive included reviews from classic gi, I will update the list when I get some time.

More goodies to come next month, only for subscribers, stay tune.

  • Wow, GoldenEye only got an 8.5?? Wow.

And I'm with BatmanPrime, I too was upset that OoT didn't get a 10
