Special Edition Podcast: Top 50 of 2012 Snubs And Grudges

Our year-end top 50 list always engenders a lot of controversy and discussion amongst our readers, so we decided to sit down for a free-ranging discussion about the games we picked, and air out some of our own personal gripes about the list.

Host Matt Helgeson is joined by Matt Bertz, Matt Miller, Adam Biessener, and Andy Reiner for our special edition "Snubs and Grudges" edition podcast. If you don't agree with every selection on our list, here's some good news: neither do all of the Game Informer editors! Although we picked our list through a scientific and democratic system of bickering in a conference room, there were still some lingering disagreements among the editors -- although not as many as in year's past. We also discuss the reasoning behind some of our picks. We hope you find this an interesting look into the process of choosing a year-end Top 50 list.

This will also be the last Game Informer Show of 2012. We thank you for listening to the show, and all of your feedback through comments, email, and Twitter. Have a happy and safe holiday season.

  • Alright podcast time.

  • =)

  • Let the games begin!

  • Oh, I'm sure that it's going to be very interesting. ^_^
And I agree with Helgeson that Dan is a complete idiot.
  • What a fantastic show!  Here's to another year of amazing ones in 2013! =)

  • Why is it an audio clip.? Why not a video? Boring!
  • This is going to be fun

  • Thanks for another year of awesome, guys! Here's hoping 2013 is just as fun!

LOL at the Mass Effect 3 "payoff:" "EA really cares..." Good one, Helgeson.
  • I swear I'm the only one that played and loved Botanicula.
  • One of my favorite podcasts yet, love the debate of great games vs GOTY that differ among the editors that happen more abundantly with viewers/gamers. I wish Mass Effect 3 was discussed more in depth though. Hahah, so Tim was one of the only ones to really enjoy Resident Evil 6?. This is where the Second Opinion section of reviews really can shine with how a game's experience differed within the same editing staff VS people simply reading other reviews of the same game.
  • "EA really cares. They shelled out big bucks for that one" - I want an audio clip of that for every time people complain about paying off reviewers.

  • Why the f*** did halo 4 get best competitive multiplayer and best shooter. Did black ops 2 and borderlands 2 not appeal to anyone but Dan!
  • I feel like the Wii has been ghetto-ized worse than Sports and PC games. Xenoblade Chronicles, anyone? Also, I would have to disagree with the comments on the 3DS. I believe there were a lot of fine titles that came out this year such as Theatrhythm, Rhythm Thief, Paper Mario, Zero Escape, Harvest Moon, Professor Layton, Resident Evil, Kingdom Hearts and so on. Maybe they didn't make an impression on the masses, but I thought they were all fine and interesting titles. I'm glad FTL got a mention, though. :)
  • Great episode! As always, it was funny and informative. :)

  • yehey

  • Wow what a great episode. I love hearing how choosing between all these games goes down. I know it was prolly hell for a few days but its heaven when i get the magazine :)

  • Excellent podcast! A little wine helps too, but I really enjoyed your insights into the GI game of the year process.

Thanks Adam for holding the torch on the PC side of the house! XCOM:EU was one of the two games I thoroughly enjoyed most this year and could not put it down until I finished it.

Reiner I was hoping you would have brought up Dragon's Dogma, but I understand, it wasn't a big hitter like ME3. Dragon's Dogma was probably my most favored unexpected game of this year. I knew it was a good game when I found myself thinking about it while I was at work.

Thanks for the excellent Game Informin!

  • Red Dead beat Mass Effect 2, though I thought Mass Effect 2 was the better game and should have won Game of the Year!
  • That was great. Thanks GI crew for another year of awesome podcasts.
