GI Show 137: Dragonborn Skyrim DLC, Lego LOTR, Spike VGAs

This week's podcast features the latest Skryim DLC, Lego Lord of the Rings, and our reaction to the Spike Video Game Awards.

We kick things off with by catching up with Lego Lord of the Rings, which has been out for a few weeks. However, the game's clever slant on Tolkien mythology is still well worth discussing. Joe Juba and Jeff Cork join host Matt Helgeson to talk about the game's considerable strengths. Next up, Andy Reiner stops by to talk about his review for Dragonborn, the third DLC pack released for Bethesda's epic Skyrim. This is the meatiest DLC for the game to date, but Reiner does have some problem's with the game's most notable functionality. Finally, a returning Reiner, Dan Ryckert, and Ben Hanson debate the 10th annual Spike TV Video Game Awards. Overall, the show was much better than in years past, and also featured an odd bit of gamesmanship from Konami and "Moby Dick Studio" about a possibly fake game called Phantom Pain. Also, Dan and Ben seriously argue about EVERYTHING in this episode, even if it had nothing to do with the VGAs. So enjoy that.

  • What I've listened to sounds excellent.

  • I've been waiting for this

  • I hope Dan rages like the 2010 episode.
  • I love arguing.

  • oooh podcast

  • I liked the part about the VGAs. I agree with most of the points too. To Dan: We love you, but you obviously don't know a good game when you play one. The Walking Dead has had positive reviews across the board, and it deserved game of the year. Just leave it alone.
  • This sounds dumb, but I'm much more inclined to get Sonic Adventure 2 rather than any kind of Skyrim DLC. I've played something like 75+ hours of Skyrim since it released and about 1000+ hours of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle since I got my GameCube way back in 2002. ALso, chaos.

  • I haven't seen this year's VGAs but I'm interested in hearing what some of the guys think about it. Also, Ben is better than Dan the moronic man-child. Persona 4 Arena was by far the best fighting game that came out this year and The Walking Dead was phenomenal. I love how Hanson burned Dan at the beginning.
  • Maybe in the next you guys can create one exclusively for Dan and Ben to go at it. ;-)

  • the only thing wrong with the VGA's was the fact they only had 7 awards in 2 hours

  • Great show guys. Oh, and I hate the VGA's.  They just feel so cheesy.

  • Drakengard was AWESOME!!! I loved that game Dragon-riding FTW!!! This has to be THE funniest episode ever XD
  • Wow that was hilarious but jesus, you are stubborn Dan.

  • The walking dead was a great interactive experience, but I cannot call it a game.
  • Ohhh Dan... If GI ever resurrects Gamer Gorilla Radio, I really want it to be you stuck in a room with Ben Hanson, Joe Juba and Andy McNamara just so they could all yell at you over your opinion of The Walking Dead... and Bryan Vore, to start the Yoshis Island argument again.
  • The BioShock Infinite footage didn't look rough at all. It was pretty meh though. I just don't know what to make of it. The whole "tears" mechanic, and the alternate universe thing with "Revenge of the Jedi". I'm just not sure how this all fits together. However, having said that, I have full faith in Ken and the whole team and I will be there for the midnight launch.

  • Awesome podcast. I really enjoyed it.

  • DRAKEN! Oh my god! I loved that game!

  • Normally, I don't like agreeing with Dan Ryckert, because his head is lodged so far up his own rump, it's almost resurfaced back out his neck hole into the right place again[perhaps this is what's happened?],
but, he his absolutely correct, Walking Dead's GOTY is a joke.
Let's forget it's just Zombie Heavy Rain, and doesn't actually do anything new, or pushes the industry forward,
It's barely a game! Its an 'interactive experience'.
Have we really gotten to the point in this industry where we think GOTY shouldn't go to an actual game?
Cause if so, let's do the right thing and give GOTY to Skyfall!
