GI Show 132: Halo 4

343 Industries took up the mantle of the Halo franchise after Bungie, and the studio has done it proud. Find out what's changed, what's new, and what's still great about Halo 4 in this week's podcast.

Host Matt Helgeson is joined by GI editors Matt Miller (who reviewed the game) and Kyle Hilliard for some in-depth discussion about one of the year's best games.

Note: Hi all, I want to apologize for this week's podcast being late. It's also a bit shorter than usual. We had a full day of meetings in relation to an upcoming issue of GI, and there wasn't much time for anyone. Sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused you, but it was the best I could do today -- Matt.

  • Nice! Any chance of a direct download?
  • There it is. Short or late, it's all good!

But needs a download link :)
  • No problem, Matt. We got a podcast, you got your meetings done. Win win.

Or maybe not win for you guys because meetings. :P

  • I wish you guys had a real RSS feed for the podcast: logging into the site just to hear it is a drag.
  • Can someone make a ringtone version of the opening song?
  • why did matt miller give halo 4 a 9.25 the same score as halo 3:ODST if this halo is the best?
  • Just beat the game and I loved it!! 343 did an awesome job. The story is kinda confusing, but i guess another play through is in order. Oh and Cortana!!!Wow I'm in love!! she looks so hot!
  • while i do agree with you guys about 343 keeping players into the game with spartan ops, the entire multiplayer component of the game was an 8GB download on a separate disc, so i do think people will have to buy it new in order to play online
  • Staff
    added download link! sheesh...what a day....anyway sorry y'all
  • Don't sweat it, Matt. Just make sure it doesn't happen again or I'm going to take 10 points from Slytherin! :P

  • Halo 4 is without a doubt the best in the series after the original. Great story (granted parts were confusing), fantastic gameplay, gorgeous graphics... 343 knocked it out of the park.

The only nitpicks I have were there should have been another couple missions of buildup before the prometheans showed up, a couple weapon sounds were odd (pistol and battle rifle especially) and explosions seem a little weak (In sound, appearance, and damage). Those are minor details in the face of an otherwise amazing game.
  • I did notice that there is a fair amount of flak for the loadouts and the power weapons being labeled. All in all I don't think it's a bad thing because it's all about keeping an even field and if they keep switching up the power weapon locations then it does just that. And the fact that as mentioned, the only thing the loadouts allow is customization, there is no sort of upperhand deal involved.

  • I love how even replaying sections can play out differently because of the great AI in the game; there was one sword wielding Elite that kept giving me trouble until he threw a bad plasma grenade and killed himself. And the sound in the game is so good it makes the assault rifle fun to use, none of the other games managed to do that.

And I agree about the multiplayer "perks"; nothing is overpowered, everything's impeccably balanced. Even the returning armor abilities from Reach are toned down significantly. The entire game feels like a fan love letter to the series and I can't wait to see what 343 does next.
  • It's ok Matt, we forgive you.

  • I agree about not being able to adjust volume controls. The sounds is incredible but hours into a campaign, I could use a little less volume in a few areas. I put on subtitles halfway through because when shooting I couldn't hear some of the talking. So far I've beat the campaign and I loved it. Haven't had a chance to jump into multiplier yet. Looking forward to having Veterans day off and a house to myself.

  • Love your podcasts!

  • I loved the campaign. It actually has quite a few emotional moments and feels a lot more sci-fi than its predecessors.
  • Missing GI Podcast on iTunes this week.  Hopefully you post it there even if it is late.  Also, missed the Weekend Warrior segment this week.

  • its not like i can get out and push...... its really a good game
