GI Show 131: Assassin's Creed III, Disney Buys LucasFilm

This week we've got one of the year's biggest games -- and discussion regarding the deal the rocked the entertainment industry this week.

We kick things off with a sometimes contentious discussion about Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed III. After three games centered around the saga of Ezio, this new chapter has a new protagonist and American Revolution setting. Host Matt Helgeson is joined by Matt Miller (who reviewed AC 3), Joe Juba, and Ben Hanson. While all agree the game is a must-play, there is some disagreement about some the decisions that Ubisoft Montreal made in designing the game.

In the next segment, Jeff Marchiafava, Adam Biessener, and Jeff Cork stop by to react to Disney's blockbuster acquisition of LucasFilm -- which includes the rights to the Star War franchise and the company's video game wing, LucasArts. What does this mean for the future of Star Wars -- and Star Wars games?

  • Big discussion indeed.

  • AC3 looks and sounds super-cool, but I haven't seen a single review of it that doesn't have the words "it's not perfect, but...". Why is everyone reserving their optimism about this game?

By the way, the best part of this show is at 52:50, when somebody shouts out "Boom Blox!" It was freakin' melodic.
  • My mind is still trying to not warp when thinking about Disney buying LucasFilm.
  • well, maybe we'll finally see Star Wars Battlefront 3...
  • After playing Final Fantasy 13, I can get through any tutorial.
  • Looking forward to AC iii, and as for Star Wars, only time will tell. While Pixar and marvel have done well under Disney, lucasfilm arguably should go through some restructuring.

  • Am I the only one that is so far disappointed by ACIII? I hate to say this, since I love the series. The intro was extremely drawn out and completely unnecessary. The naval stuff that I played so far was pretty good, and I haven't gotten too far into it (since the intro was so long), but it's just not doing it for me.
  • Listening now. Thanks again for another great podcast release, Matt.

  • Listening now. Thanks again for another great podcast release, Matt.

  • Irvin Kershner died 2 years ago if that question was serious

  • Attention Disney: We need X-Wing and Tie-Fighter reboots!

    Make it happen please!

  • great podcast, and I agree with Miller when he said AC3 is the best game in the series. It shows, story-wise and scale-wise.

  • Let's see how this review process might've gone...just for the sake of this being a purely a light exercise in numbers

Let's say every game starts out at 10, what can I say, I am an eternal optimist. But let's pare the number for the inevitable blemish and bugs that'd affect that perfect sheen of marketing pap and shrink wrap:

10.00 starting point, the best case scenario, fantastic naval segments, a lot of freedom of movement, great sense of closure, etc.
9.75 a few technical glitches, as in AI scripts not firing, etc.
9.50 a few graphical bugs, clipping and so on
9.25 a few slowdowns and frame rate issues
9.00 a few spotty network issues
    8.75 tedious Desmond section
8.50 first few hours of boredom of shoe horned, linear tutorials
8.25 questionable quest design such as in stealth and escort missions (as mentioned by Dan Ryckert in the latest 'Game Informal')
8.00 no cohesion in the plot (you 'jump around' as heard on this podcast), perhaps Connor not as likeable a character as Ezio
7.75 side missions seem to exist in vacuum, does not inform anything about the main story
7.50 (personal opinion), useless tiered DLCs
    +2.00 ambition

Is ambition or unrealized potential in certain cases enough to compensate for the issues above? If it is, ACIII is your game.
  • Yea Ben Hanson, how dare ubisoft give you more unique content!
  • I'm actually excited to see what Disney comes up with for the continuation of the Star Wars Saga.

  • LOL someone on Wikipedia actually edited the article to say that Charles Lee was killed by Connor Kenway
