GI Show 129: Bond Games, Skylanders Giants

In this week's episode, we discuss james Bond's legacy in games and why no game has truly captured the essence of 007. We also talk about the latest Skylanders game.

In the first segment, we use the disappointing 007 Legends as a jumping off point to talk about James Bond's history in games. The iconic spy has had an inconsistent relationship with video game, starring in classics like GoldenEye and a host of disappointments. Host Matt Helgeson is joined by Tim Turi, Andy Reiner, and Ben Reeves as we speculate on why no game has really done justice to the franchise, and what the ultimate Bond game would look like.

In the second segment, Reiner returns to talk Skylanders Giants, the latest in Activision and Toys for Bob's commercial game/toy blockbuster series.

  • Does anyone else just hate Daniel Craig?

EDIT: I suggested this in the "How Do We Fix Bond" article: Make a Hitman game, but instead of 47, have 007.
  • My brain is having a hard time processing that last sentence.
And, Matt, Pokemon has made great changes and improvements since the first games; They're not anything like what Activision does. You obviously haven't played the games much, if at all.
  • Give the 007 licensce to Rocksteady!
  • Agent Under Fire was a good game, and it had bits and pieces of many genres including vehicular combat, rail shooting, stealth, and first person aspects.

  • So glad you mentioned the gameboy james bond 007 game, so good considering it came out on the original gameboy. I would love to see a new bond game that was more about stealth and investigating.

  • congratulations reiner, i'd assume by the time this gets posted things may have escalated xD hope everything goes okay and hope you still get time to play games after this haha

  • You guys should have Ben on every week. He's seminal;)

  • Goldeneye (N64): The Bond game fans needed, but not the one they deserve

  • Ive played Bloodstone and goldeneye. not a bond game ill tell you that
  • love me some podcast

  • Podcast!

  • Podcast!

  • That really looks like Daniel Craig.

  • Blood Stone was all those things you're asking for - 3rd person, original story, slowed down, etc. great game.

  • great 007 movie

  • I really do not care for Daniel Craig as a Bond because I feel he drastically takes it away from stealth and the notion of being a Spy. It essentially feels like he is just like Bourne or that guy from 24. Make James Bond feel like he used to, envision him like I believe the author envisioned him.
