GI Show 111: Spec Ops: The Line, Dragon's Dogma, Ghost Recon

The GI Show kicks off with an interview with Spec Ops: The Line writer Walt Williams, who discusses the game's ambitious storytelling which gives players a wide range of moral choice. Williams and the team were inspired by such cinematic classics as Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket, and hope Spec Ops will provide a darker, more conflicted view of modern-day war.

In the second segment, host Matt Helgeson is joined by Jeff Cork, who reviewed Dragon's Dogma, an interesting take on the action/RPG genre. The game's combat is more complex than you'd expect and there are a few other interesting design elements worth discussing. Finally, longtime series fan Matt Bertz stops by to talk about his review for Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, the lastest in the storied tactical shooter series.

  • Yes!, lets have some serious Dragons Dogma talk, and not the abomination to anatomy that Dan stab-him-in-the-nuts Ryckert perpetrated :)
  • Thanks for the Dragon's Dogma stuff, I really want to try this game out. The demo just wasn't enough
  • I love the music that plays at the beginning of these. Really gets me in the mood to listen.
  • was that a dog in the beginning of the show?
  • That discussion about Spec Ops: The Line was fantastic. You can't possibly imagine how happy it makes me that someone who understands art to the level that Mr. Williams does is in charge of writing that game. Loved hearing his thoughts on art and videogame writing. In all seriousness though, that discussion sold me on Spec Ops. Guaranteed buy at this point. Looking forward to it :)
  • Awesome episode!

  • Mod

Man, I was hoping to hear Jack Gardner on the show. I can vouch for him as a podcaster. He do good.

  • I know this guy is supposed to make me interested in Spec Ops, but he REALLY makes me interested in Spec Ops. For a military focused shooter in an age of them, this guy makes it seem much more unique.

  • What's the song at 24:57? After the Spec Ops discussion? Has a really good beat to it... Also, great podcast! Hope that Spec Ops does well, and both Dragon's Dogma and Ghost Recon sound like I should give them a try.
  • Maybe the writer for Spec Ops: The Line should also be their community manager, because he just sold a game that I had no interest in before hand. It'll be like the first 12 minutes of UP, for 10 sweaty hours.

  • I'm having a blast with Ghost Recon. I had some reservations after the beta, but I'm glad I gave it a chance anyway. It's refreshing to play a true strategic, team-based shooter. Even the unlocks (that I'm usually not a big fan of) are handled extremely well.
  • You and I is actually proper grammar.

  • With Dragon's Dogma, can you still get pawns from other games if you don't have Xbox Live Gold?

  • great episode as usual love GI-show

  • Awesome GI Show guys, as usual!
