Respec Radio Ep. 27: The Old Republic So Far

We're back from break, and would you believe we wasted most of our holiday time off playing the freshly-launched Star Wars: The Old Republic? Of course we did.

Adam Biessener, Andy McNamara, and Andrew Reiner join me on this episode of Respec Radio to discuss the first few week's of BioWare's massive new game. We go over the combat highs, the buggy lows, what we think of the class storylines so far, and even our progress on romancing our companions -- or, well, mine at least.

Listen to the episode below, and then go back and catch previous episodes of Respec Radio on our hub page. You can also guarantee that you don't miss an episode by subscribing to the show on iTiunes or via our RSS feed.

  • Sweet! I still haven't decided if I want to get this or not.
  • This game is awesome. The best thing about it in my opinion is definitely the combat. My one complaint is the unsocial aspect of it. Groups are hardly ever needed, and when I am in a group there is a dead silence from every member of the group. Same thing with every guild I have joined. The thing WoW has over this game is definitely the social aspect. I also find that I am not as addicted to this game as I was to WoW, but I still love it. B+.
  • I don't think you're alone when playing SWTOR during the holidays. But, I'm enjoying it so far.

  • When I get my pc fixed I'm definitely thinking about getting this. I've actually never been a huge bioware fan but star wars has always an will always have a soft spot with me.

  • Rocket punch! Ok, now where's my falcon?

  • Don't worry, I'm trying the powertech right now :P

  • My friends and I are having loads of fun ^-^

  • Power, tech power, alacrity, aim, cunning, what these things are I still have no idea.
  • Huh.  Your assertions to the contrary, it sounds like you're NOT recommending this game.

Unless you play the flamethrower class.

  • From a level 50 Sith Juggernaut DPS that's done all the raids already (they are really easy) and alot of PvP I have a few things to say.

1)OMG THIS GAME IS SOOO BUGGY!!!!!!! It took us like 4 hours to kill the final boss of Eternity Vault because of bugs. And that's just one of the many bugs that are running rampant atm.

2)Bounty Hunter/Trooper are insanely over-powered in PvP atm. Tracer Missle/Charged Bolts need a huge nerf and their survivablity without any assistance is far from fair

    3) Getting Gear for PvE is hilariously easy, I gained somewhere around 4-5 pieces in a single raid , meanwhile getting PvP gear takes far more time.

    4) They killed world pvp before this game began
  • I've enjoyed it so far, but it barely feels like an MMO. It seems like I'm paying for a single player game with chat. I'm hoping that will change, but I have no clue yet.
  • I just love hearing people whine and saying "This game us buggy" "This game is slightly broken" "This game is too much like WoW" (WoW crap gets old fast...you people paid money to play this game GET OVER IT! It is nothing like WoW besides the UI and a few other things) yet you all keep forgetting it is a MMO. MMOs are never completely finished. In fact I can say with a fact the only thing no one whines about is that it has never had a major server crash. That for one Bioware has done right. The NPC AI as an Ally has not failed me. Sure the guy gets stuck a time or two or when they get knocked down they stay down. That is a easy fix. Just remove them and bring them back. All you need to do. Sure the server strength isn't strong and has memory leak but like I stated before. Have you completely crashed a server? Only thing I've crashed was a computer but that was because my Nortons was being stupid and forced it to shut down. Fixed that. So enough with the moaning and groaning and just wait. Everything will be ironed out. Bugs will be fixed. More will appear. They will be fixed. Classes will be evened out. In the end. You all will be B*tch and Moaning and griping still. So no one is ever happy with a MMORPG.
  • Meh to MMORPG's.
  • purple light saber all the way baby!!!!
  • I'm not a huge MMO guy, but what bugs me is the big icons and numbers that surround your screen and the small text that can become hard to see and/or read. But I've seen the game for myself and I like the battles and classes you can have. I'm still not sure if I want to get into an MMO right now though.

  • I Love Star Wars!
  • Is it just me or are they being a little harsh?  I have the game, I love it, I've got a 40 Sith Warrior and some level 28s, and I still love it.

Kind of an abrupt about-face from their high-praises podcast a while ago.  It almost sounds like they're playing a different game.

  • DANG that was a lot of complaining. You guys should go out and get Jim Rome to do an introduction for this podcast. That was I will be more mentally prepared for it.

I am not going to sit here and say that the game has no issues, it does but I don't think any of them are game breaking. I guess maybe I am just lucky I have had no memory issues, no quest breaking bugs or even 3 minute loading textures. I will occasionally have a bugged texture or a skipped animation but not much more than that.

I also wonder why people are in such a massive rush to get to level 50 and see all the content. I tried that with Rift and maybe I am just getting old but I have been enjoying SWTOR so much more just taking my time and exploring this new world.

2 things did truly bother me about the pod-casts comments. The UI issues, lets be honest you guys were comparing it to the WOW UI and addons you can get for WOW. Try and remember back wow original WOW UI was so much worse than SWTOR is now. It took blizzard like 6 years to get a decent base UI. SWTOR does need work. It is missing basic features like target of target and the ability to run 3rd party addons. I am not concerned about this though because didn't they say that the UI was going to be one of their main focuses for patches in the beginning.

2nd is the unusual stat names/unknown skills and talent trees(I guess that's 3 in 1 but ehh). Again I think your group as a whole is looking back at WOW. The names of stats did throw me off at first also, but then I spent 5 minutes searching google and I was good to go. I think if they had gone with the standard Strength, Agility, Intellect...etc everyone wold be slamming them for not doing anything original. I think very quickly the new names will become second nature.

As for the known abilities and skill trees that will again come with time. The reason in WOW you know what skills to interrupt in pvp is because of past experiences. As you become more familiar with the game and classes other than your own you will learn..hey that hurts, i should not let him do that. The cookie cutter skill trees will come as people learn the mechanics and do the math to figure out the best builds. Personally I really enjoy not having those yet...for me it adds a bit more to the new experience.

Sorry for the rant. Just seems to me there are 2 types of people talking about the game, those that completely ignore any issues the game has and those that do nothing but focus on those issues. I find the game to be far more in the middle. Its a very enjoyable game that is currently held down from greatness with issues that can be easily fixed. The big question is when will they be fixed.
  • For the first 25 levels or so, my Bounty Hunter's class quests and the abundance of voice work had me bamboozled-- I thought BioWare had managed something really special. I especially got a kick out of the group conversation system, having something more interesting to roll on than gear upgrades.

Then I got to Alderaan. I can't put my finger on when exactly it happened (probably around the dozenth bug-man I murdered), but the tint of the launch goggles finally faded. At last, I could see that ol' Wizard behind the curtain, telling me to kill x-many whatevers that fight and die like the last x-many whatevers I just killed.

The best I could hope for was a Light or Dark side decision at the end of a dungeon, which still never felt befitting of a Bounty Hunter. Morality and faction alignment seem to play counter to the very essence of the class. Were I a Bounty Hunter, the highest bidder would get my services, but the XP-chase nature of the MMO forced me in to countless filler missions that painted my character as some sort of Imperial loyalist, if not their hero. It didn't help that half of my character's responses seemed entirely generic: "Where do I come in?" "Compared to my last job, this'll be nothing." Whenever I'd hear him repeat dialog, I'd regret not choosing another response option on the off chance that he would've said something new.

Jamming on attacks seems to reset them sometimes. Sometimes, an attack that requires you to be stationary won't trigger immediately after you stop moving, as the game assumes you're still moving. A lot of the animations align goofily or overlap clumsily.

Even though I've squeeze just about every ounce of enjoyment out of WoW that I could hope to get, I've still never played an MMO that matches the predictable responsiveness of WoW's controls-- from triggering attacks to the simple act of jumping.

This feels like lipstick on a pig, to me, but I know Star Wars is a pretty enough lipstick shade that people will kiss it regardless of the barnyard animal it's painted on.
  • I just have one question to ask: Are there Electrostaffs in this?
