Respec Radio Ep. 26: Star Wars: The Old Republic Beta Report

Not even two weeks since our last episode, and Respec Radio is back! This time, Matt Miller and Adam Biessener join me to discuss the beta for Star Wars: The Old Republic.

In this hour-long talk, we dive into the first 20 levels of our Empire-side characters, including how close to World of Warcraft the combat is, why the companion system is awesome, and whether BioWare's promise of storytelling we'll actually care about seems to have been delivered.

Sound like a show you want to listen to? Check it out below or subscribe to our RSS feed, and be sure to take a look at the Respec Radio hub for all past episodes of our MMO podcast.

  • After listening to a number of different people talk about this game is making me dying to get into the beta. ;-;
  • Really looking forward to Star Wars. I haven't been playing WoW, and I got out of Rift quite quickly, so hopefully this game can provide a new mmo fix.

  • Off topic: I'm not in anyway excited for MW3, but why wait so long to put up a review when people will be going to midnight release in less then a few hours? (Is it that bad? lol)

  • This MMO is likely to be my last bout with the genre, if it doesn't bring me in I will be done with this side of gaming for quite some time.

I'm at a point where I don't even want any sort of beta, prefer the genre to be fresh.

    Edit: I despise RP
  • The respec radio I have been waiting for.

  • Aye?

  • Yay! I just finished listening to the Pandarium episode (again, because I have nothing else to do...), and I went to the hub and bam! Here's the new episode!

  • Cool. I am in no way an "MMO guy," but I definitely want to give this game a chance. The story stuff sounds awesome, which is huge for me.

  • WOW! (no pun intended) I am surprised and relieved to hear some positive opinions from what I was beginning to think was a staff of hateful lads.

  • This game better be worth it because I just canceled my WoW sub in hopes that I can forget about it and switch my MMO focus to SWTOR. Thankfully this podcast is doing a decent job of swaying me to the dark side.

  • I just can't do MMO's.  They are fun, but almost always die out and are plagued with gold spammers and such.  There are flaws in them all.  Give me single player any day.

  • Great podcast. Good to hear all the systems are working well. I'm pretty excited about this. The separate stories will be enough to get me to play every class at least once, I'm sure.

This will probably be any early buy for me. It's just a matter of money.

  • Fantastic episode.  I've been excited for this game for years.  I'm glad to hear such positive views by people who have been able to see the game in action.  Glad to hear it looks like my faith (and money) in Bioware has been well placed.

  • Excellent show guys.  Really makes me excited for The Old Republic.

  • Well TOR sounds like a good game for Star wars nuts, (me included) and New MMORPG players, And it sounds a lot bigger then WOW in the size factor, a bunch of planets, pretty big and hopefully balanced. With the Sci-fye world of Star wars we wont be doing so much Grinding for some EWOK pelts, yes I'm hoping we get to kill some ewoks. Sounds like a awesome story and soloing. P.S Hopefully the talents will be "pretty" balanced first time in. Thanks guys for the heads up. For the SITH

  • I'm glad that you guys cover ToR so thoroughly. I've had a lot of questions as to how captivating the game is going to be and from all of your reactions to the beta it sounds like it's going to be blast. Phil, are you guys gonna set up a GI guild for launch? Also, I know you guys didn't cover it in the show and I don't know how much you can divulge but how was your character customization in the beta? Did you have a lot of control over what you could and could not change with you character?
  • I really want this. But i don't know if my computer can handle it >
  • Staff
BioWare said that the character customization would likely change quite a bit from what we saw to launch, so we didn't talk much about it. I thought my character was awesome-looking; I'll leave it at that ;)
