Special Edition Podcast: Dark Souls #1

We already talked about Dark Souls a bit on last week's episode of the Game Informer Show, but we're way too obsessed with this game around the office to be done.

On this first of a handful of special editions of the podcast devoted to Dark Souls, I'm joined by Andrew Reiner, Jeff Marchiafava, and new GI editor Jim Reilly to discuss our constant fascination with this difficult game. We talk about our progress so far, how it stacks up against Demon's Souls, and why the strategy guide is so awesome.

This is definitely a change of pace compared to our regular podcast, so please let us know in the comments how you like it. We'll probably be doing at least a couple more Dark Souls-focused episodes, so if you're playing be sure to leave some comments letting us know how far you are or if you have any questions about the game you want us to answer next week.

  • Awesome. I'm obsessed as well. clicky click...
  • Is it really that good?
  • How many times will I die listening to this?
  • This game along with many others series that I've missed out on so far keep pushing me to buy a PS3....Sony has way better exclusives than Xbox I must say.

Anyway, always like the GI podcasts.

Edit: I have neither a PS3 or Xbox I'm a PC guy, just saying, PS3 exclusives pull me towards a purchase faaaar more.
  • Cannot stop thinking about Dark Souls...
  • I've only gotten to the Undead Parish. Probably because I've created 4 separate characters (I like to find what playstyle I like the best: spellcaster, quick dual swords, sword and shield, or hammer and miracles). Overall, I love this game.
  • I hate this new black and white format in the comments GI it hurts my eyes
  • is there anyway we could get a kings field of shadow tower replay?
  • This is the best thing ever... thank you so much Phil.

Currently I'm trying to face the Gaping Dragon in the Depths. Probably going to have an even harder time because I'll be listening to this while I try to do so.

Really really loving the game. There's some things I like better then Demon's Souls and some things I wish they kept. The Estus Flask system is so awesome in that you always have health in some form, but you can't get drunk off of healing potions to get past any encounter. Plus you can invest humanity and the fire demon's soul to improve the effect and rate.

I feel like not having half health in hallow form feels cheap after being so used to it in Demon's Souls. I feel too powerful now, and there's not as much punishment for not being human. But the game is plenty hard enough.
  • It's great seeing this game get so much love. It's such a unique game, and I really think it's going to stick out from the avalanche of a lineup that this fall has in store.
  • more Gameinformer podcasts is never a bad thing. Great part of my week.

  • I love you guys for doing this. I'll be giving it a listen tomorrow. I'm soaking up and and all info about the game I can. Sen's Fortress is where I made it before hanging up the game for the night to play some Gears 3.

  • Nice. Currently I just finished up on Ceasless Discharge boss along with kill the optional undead dragon in Valley of the Drakes. I don't know why but I couldn't get so much into Demon's Souls (I think just because of the colors really, yes the colors don't judge, just was a bit bland in that area) but I'm hooked onto Dark Souls and enjoying it.

  • Well the hype for this game reinvigorated my interest in getting through Demon's Souls. I'll pick this up at some point.
  • I have a feeling that Phil really likes this game.

  • wow nice

  • Hearing Jim Reilly talk about loving Demon's Souls so much he got the Platinum Trophy is different region versions of the game I assume he will do the same for Dark Souls.
  • I'm up to Anor Lando now. SI 68 or so warrior and struggling against Ornstein and Snough with my drake sword I should've gotten rid of by now. So I've left to farm souls so I can upgrade a weapon to lightning and take care of Ornstein quickly.
  • Just beat Sen's Fortress (Phil made it sound so much worse than it was...for me, at least. Then again, I used Reiner & Phil's Dark souls look as a bit of a walktrhough...Thanks guys.) and I'm gonna start making my Anor Londo push tomorrow. I'm loving it, even more so than Demon's Souls. All the areas look really great, and their atmosphere is just perfect. My favorite areas so far are probably Darkroot Garden and Anor Londo. However, I hated Blighttown, which terrifies me, as did the Valley Of Defilement in Demon's Souls. It was the most trouble I've had. I do not look forward to it's rickety boardwalks and it's poison infested enemies/swamps in NG+. This game is so good. So, so good.
  • With everything coming out in these next couple months, I'm super strapped for cash.

Luckily, I never made a ton of progress through Demon's Souls.

This should be a joy to listen to as I do so.
