Special Edition Podcast: Todd Howard Skyrim Q&A

Game Informer's web coverage of our The Elder Scroll V: Skyrim cover story has proven to be popular with Bethesda's legion of devoted RPG fans. Today, we're pleased to present a special edition of the Game Informer Show, in which Bethesda's Todd Howard answers questions we solicited from our community of online users. It's nearly an hour of freewheeling discussion, we put your queries to Howard, who gives some revealing responses -- while still leaving more than a bit of mystery surrounding the game. Some of the topics covered include the game's combat system, spells, factions, and the powerful dragons that reign terror over the world of Skyrim.

Note: We thank all our readers who submitted questions. We received an unprecedented number of responses, and as a result, it was simply impossible to have Todd answer more than a fraction of the submissions. In hopes of covering as many readers as possible, we tried to concentrate on questions that were asked many times over by multiple readers. Still, if your question was not answered, we apologize.

  • created a lot more questions than i had before... but i still loved it! great work guys!!

  • Wow, totally answered my burning question! ^_^ I love dragons, and this makes me super excited to see their perspective of them. I can't wait to see how they look either. Thanks for the info GI and thanks for the interview Mr. Howard! ^_^

btw, You should hold a forum questionnaire sometime. That would be really neat. Possibly be able to cover more questions that way? I don't know, but I just know it would be cool to talk to devs that way.

  • If we can't be friendly to dragons, there should be a substitute so you can somehow be friendly to a variation of dragon, or some other such thing. I'm just annoyed we can't do anything at all about the fact that we have to kill the dragons no matter what. And also... Gameplay is "not that far off" Hope it's soon!
  • Oh how bad, my question isn't inside. So perhaps anyone here has an opinion to this question: Is there any connection between "The Infernal City" and its upcoming novel AND The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim? It's something I really really would like to know, in addition to I heard from the epic podcast.
  • The Greybeards are going to call us. That will be epic.

  • I love Gameinformer and Todd Howard; Gameformer should do things like this more often I am really impressed.
  • i spent more time playing TES games then i did studying in school XD

    and i dont regret it!!

  • This music makes me want to go out, buy a sword, and just like run through a forest yelling "I'VE FOUGHT MUDCRABS MORE FEARSOME THAN YOU" until the game comes out!
  • The first game I ever played on a next gen console (obviously the current generation now) was Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Being raised on Final Fantasy, Zelda, and Dragon Quest, I thought I understood RPGs. Oblivion completely redefined my notions of what constituted an RPG, and in my opinion forever revolutionized gaming. What made it so amazing is how I could always return to Oblivion, even years after its release. Bethesda truly crafted a masterpiece, and I would go so far as to say that Oblivion was the best RPG made in the last ten years. As such, when Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was announced, judging from my response, most would have assumed that I had heard of the second coming of the messiah.

Bethesda, everything you touch turns to gold. I cannot think of a developer with a higher pedigree, and I trust that Skyrim will be every bit as magical and groundbreaking as its predecessor if not more so. Some might accuse me of being a tad overdramatic, but believe me when I say this: I am excited for Skyrim.
  • Todd Howard...great interview...Gameinformer...I understand that probably a lot of people didn't ask my same question...But the fact remains that out of all the questions asked mine you can honestly say will not be answered until well after the game comes out and to late for me to buy the appropriate version of the game!!!! I want to buy it for the PS3 however with Oblivion only one of the DLC's were available for that system. So now thanks to my question not being asked I have to wait for god knows how long until the game is out to find out about DLC or take a chance down the crap shoot...So thank you Gameinformer for not informing me and making my next 9 months HELL!!!

  • Almost cummed my pants after the beginning music
  • AWSOME AWSOME AWSOME AWSOME AWSOME AWSOME

  • YES!  I can't get enough of Elder Scrolls news!!!  11.11.11 can't come soon enough!

  • thank you for giving me something really long to listen to over and over again, while i wait for the next big news break. honestly these short things, videos, articles or what ever, i literally read them watch them listen to them over and over and over again, about 100 times or more and i almost memorize the whole video. now that this is an hour long by the time i memorize it something new will probably be out. so thank you very much.
  • 280 perks?!?!? Wow...

  • Anyone else replaying the song at the end over and over?
  • Dos nobody care if there is a muti player? I thought that would be one of the most ask things.
  • I haven't even gotten to the talking bits yet, but that music is so *** amazing that I already crapped myself.

  • Take your time Bethesda. Don't leave anything out. I can definitely wait if it means not skimping on any awesome features.
  • Great Podcast. Can't wait for them to show some gameplay!
