Special Edition Podcast: Tomb Raider

We're giving the regular Game Informer Show a rest this week in favor of a special edition podcast for our current cover story, Crystal Dynamic's bold reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise. There's been a flurry of interest in this story from the Tomb Raider community, so we thought we'd give our readers a chance to ask the people working on the game questions about the game. Crystal Dynamics' global brand manager Karl Stewart and Tomb Raider franchise director Tim Longo were nice enough to call in to the GI Show, and give some intriguing answers to reader questions (posed by our cover story author Meagan Marie and GI editor Matt Miller). Did your question get asked? You'll have to listen to find out. Either way, this is mandatory for Tomb Raider fans.

Note: The opening and closing music to the podcast is a sneak peak at a track from the game itself.

The music gives me chills, its epic. The game sounds so promising, maybe game of the year potential. Calling it right now gameplay footage on Christmas.
  • "We're giving the regular Game Informer Show a rest this week in favor of a special edition podcast for our current cover story" :( I was hoping for both. Oh well.
  • Awesome. Ever since reading the cover story last week, I have been unusually excited about this game. I've been a big fan of CD's treatment of the franchise, but as much as I enjoyed those first three games, if this reboot turns out to be half as good as it sounds, it will easily eclipse everything that has come before. Looking forward to it, Crystal Dynamics!

  • Amazing! Thank you everyone!

    Thanks Meagan! :)

  • That was a really interesing segment. I can't wait to see what comes from this game, though I've never actually been a Tomb Raider fan. The music sounds great though.
  • Hm. Nice podcast; although I (And many others) still feel a bit ill-formed of what's going on with the game. We got some of our questions answered, but I still feel a sense of not getting enough information. Too evasive. It's great that CD is working harder this time, and it is still a bit too early to reveal everything. Oh, the trailer; excited for that :)
  • yeehaa...they mentioned me :) I gotta say, that my main question was answered. Trailer coming soon. But the interview makes me believe that it won't get released until 2012... :(
  • Okay...I'm pretty disappointed about the swimming part. I mean, swimming and diving has always been a big part of TR games and each time I play games like Uncharted or Assassin's Creed and I can't dive I'm disappointed but I think "Oh well, at least Tomb Raider still has it." and they can't just take it out. I mean, the way they put it swimming/diving segments don't seem to be an important part of the level design, either. I'm pleased that story seems to be so important to them, though. I mean, there hasn't been a good TR story since Angel of Darkness and Underworld's story was just absolutely awful so this is very good to hear. Other than that, I have to say I'm surprised that they're still testing so many things. I was expecting a fall '11 release but it seems like they're aiming for 2012. However, it is very weird of them to start promoting the game already if it's not gonna come out next year (or very early '12). Whatever. If the release is next year, everyone will be happy to get their hands on it so early and if it's in '12 Squeenix will be dodging Uncharted 3 which might be a good thing to do. Well this podcast has certainly done one thing: It's made me super-excited for that trailer :D.
  • I can't wait for the trailer. Especially if there's a cool launch one like Underworld's.

I actually like that they haven't given away too much, and I hope they don't. With Underworld when you see all the different screenshots and info, leading up to the release, I basically got the story line. This time they should give just enough info so we know where it's going without giving away too much.

^^ I agree with Dark Experience. I was hoping for a dramatic swimming. Like if they're trying to make it as if 'what would we do?' explain why Lara goes swimming with knee high boots then! But please let her be able to swim. :)

  • I think this game will be an awesome reboot, it seems Crystal Dynamic is dead serious about making this game better than the previous ones.

Plus, I think playing as a younger Laura, and twisting it into a survival game as well, will do this game justice.

  • I hope they come out with a Tomb Raider sound track. I would totally play that music on Halloween, man!

  • I so excited about this game cnt wait for it, huge fan My must have over all games :)

  • is it going to be first person view or helicopter view
  • I knew they were saving the best question for last. While I've been eager to move back to Hollywood, CA, I might just have to move to the Bay Area so I can work as a tester on this game. I really do miss working ridiculously long hours as a tester during crunch time, though I'm not sure why.

  • That music sounds freakin' awesome. A little bit Marilyn Manson, a little bit Inception (it did kind of sound like that vibe), very, very dark and intense. You can consider me sold on the soundtrack if nothing else :)

  • Can't wait for the game!

  • The music sounds great.
  • Thanks to GI (specially Meagan) and Crystal D for this

Even though they couldn't say much, as expected i'm happy with most of what i heard, also thanks for picking one of my questions

Looking foward to the rest of the TR hub coverage

    Love the track btw
  • Game sound great, buti dont get why everything feels like it has to go more towards, dark and gritty remakes. I like it in a lot of cases, but at what point is this theme going to turn cliche?
  • This podcast is annoying me, I've listened to 20 minutes so far and they have revealed nothing new. Should have left this podcast until a later date, ridiculous. Really looking forward to the game though.
