Game Informer Show: Mario Galaxy 2, ModNation Racers

The Game Informer Show is hot this week. Ben even tries to kick some hip hop slang. It's ridiculous. But not as ridiculously good as Super Mario Galaxy 2. Reviewer and host Matt Helgeson and Dan Ryckert discuss this game's numerous strengths and slight weaknesses. Also, Dan is awesome at games and didn't think it was a hard game. In the second segment Game Informer head honchos Andy McNamara and Andy Reiner stop by to speculate on the fallout from the announcement that longtime Sony second party studio Insomniac Games (Ratchet & Clank, Resistance) are now developing a multi-platform game for EA Partners. Finally, Joe Juba, Ben Reeves, Annette Gonzalez, and Dan Ryckert hit the studio for conversation about ModNation Racers, LittleBigPlanet 2, and what these games mean for the future of user-created content.

Woot! I've been refreshing GI homepage all day waiting for this. I was afraid we wouldn't get it until tomorrow.

    *EDIT*
Nice name drop with Goonies 2 on the NES. I think that was first game my siblings and I decided to buckle down and beat in a day. Definitely the first one we cracked out a notepad for stuff other than passwords. Good times had by all.
  • I have to agree with dan that Super Mario Galaxy 2 is not as hard. I already have 112 stars and I don't think I have died more than 15 times on any of the levels. Were the first Super mario Galaxy I think I died 50 or so times on some of the purple coin levels.

  • Mario Galaxy 2 definately isnt hard, but it is challenging. (if that makes sense). there were only a couple of levels where i died multiple times, but getting thru certain levels certainly wasnt easy or predictable.

  • man iv been waiting for this all day

  • Listening to it now. Looks to be pretty good. Too bad I don't have a Wii. Or a PS3.

  • Thanks guys

  • What's good son?

    Nice!

I want all three of those games, too bad Alan Wake and Red Dead made me broke.

  • I think it's pretty cool that Insomniac is going multiplatform now, I'd like to see what new IP they come out with.

  • I really like the musical interludes. Helps set the mood.

  • Uhhhhhhhhh Well lol. I listened to the ModNation Racers part which was good.... lol.

  • Cool Podcast guys! I'm super stoked for LBP2!!

  • ModNation Racers looks interesting and I know the character and car creation aspects are deep but the track editor looks a little shallow. I know they were going for something really accessible but I think LittleBigPlanet struck a better balance.

I've only played the demo and read a couple of articles but it looks like you can't create something like a racetrack going through all the various rooms of Resident Evil's Spencer Mansion, which is something I would have created. I could be wrong but it looked like the track creator was focused more on open valleys and such.

I'm still gonna pick the game up but I don't think the game's concept will fully be realized until the sequel.

  • Well, I listened to the Mario part. I wussied out through the rest lol. Great Podcast guys.

  • So...this is good and all, but...where's Respec Radio?

  • Sounds like a funny and kind of fun game. I like Mario but haven't been able to play a Mario game for a long time because I don't have any new Nintendo consoles and I don't want one either.

  • I played Super Mario Galaxy, and gave it a 9. Is Galaxy 2 worth checking out?

  • Great show, guys. I had to listen to it all this time because it involved Galaxy.

Regarding difficulty compared to the first game, I would say the first was harder in a bad way. Galaxy 2 is hard in a fun way. Like in 1, that exact level you mentioned with the purple coins on the giant Luigi platform...that was just ridiculous. It wasn't challenging, it was just a throw-lives-at-it-until-you-win level. In fact, it's one of the 5 levels remaining which I haven't managed to beat.

Galaxy 2 is hard because it challenges you. I have yet to encounter a level where some part of it simply requires mindless repetition. They're all about cool and different ways to play. Sure, a couple levels are annoying because they abandon the norm (the bird levels) but they also feel like a nice sort of change. I don't mind them.

  • I really enjoy the way Sony is pushing the play, create, share.  While I may not care to spend time creating levels, there are plenty of people that do and make some fantastic content.
