The Game Informer Show Ep. 25: F.E.A.R. 3, Marvel Vs. Capcom 3

It's been a busy deadline week in the halls of Game Informer, but that hasn't stopped us from preparing the most three-intensive episode of the Game Informer Show since...well, Episode 3, probably.

With host Matt Helgeson out, I invite Jeff Cork onto the show to explain why we should be interested in the game based on Pixar's Toy Story 3. After that, Matt Bertz takes the guest chair to spill the beans on F.E.A.R. 3, the first main game in the franchise that will be developed by someone other than Monolith. We discuss the potential good points of the upcoming game and also some aspects that have us a bit worried. For the final segment, a freshly-tanned Tim Turi tells all about his trip to Hawaii and the various Capcom games he saw there -- including Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 and Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

All this plus some wonderful music from the talented Jonathan Mann, whose tunes can and should be checked out on his website. Listen to the full show below or subscribe on iTunes or via our RSS feed.

  • Just finished it. Good show. I'm actually looking forward to Toy Story 3. I remember thinking how cool it would be to play the Buzz Lightyear game at the beginning of Toy Story 2. Now I'll finally get the chance.
  • These podcasts make life interesting again.(besides playing Halo 3)

  • What could be more fun than recording a podcast. Btw Phil your voice just isnt the same as Matts. Sorry. lol.

No matther how cool Toy Story 3 sounds as a game, I doubt ill play it just because its based of a movie.

I feel like I should go give Fear 1 and 2 a go now. Ive always avoided horror games untill Bioshock... If that really counts, I mean it said Horror on the case.

Phil you get way off topic lmao, Maybe this is why Matt does the podcasts.

  • @Night: Uh, sorry I have a different voice than Matt's (WTF?) and like having fun with the show?

  • @ Assassinate the Creed its still worth listening to. I never could get into F.E.A.R I didn't like the gunplay.

  • I remember the beginning of Toy Story 2, god that movie was amazing.  I think I might check up on this game a bit more now.  Never been a fan of FEAR though.  And well Marvel vs Capcom 3 will be amazing.  And btw, I know Dynasty Warriors games are boring but shockingly enough...I still play them?  I know, it's sad.

  • I don't understand what's so terrible about Phil's voice. It might not be all low or whatever but it really pops out, and I really didn't notice anyone getting off topic.

I'm about halfway through the podcast, and though I read the feature in the magazine, I've just come to realize how disturbingly wrong F.E.A.R. is.

Also, Jeff Cork...I thought it was really funny how you went from doing a feature on Toy Story 3 and the next article was Dead Rising 2! How the heck do you go from kid-friendly action figures to blood, gore, guts, and zombies?!
  • @ASpoonyBard: It surprised me being reminded of how messed up F.E.A.R. is too! It's easy to forget that when you're playing.

  • I don't care what the topic is I always enjoy listening to the podcasts.

  • great show guys

  • Marvel has increased involvement in Marvel vs Capcom 3? No thanks. I love their comics and their movies are mostly entertaining, but leave the games to the people who know what they're doing.

Thing 1, "Why can't I shoot web with Spider-Man anymore?"

Thing 2, "His web shooters are out of fluid."  Q(`~`Q)

  • Don't worry Phil, I think you make a great host :)

I'm actually sort of hoping that the Toy Story 3 video game will be a success, it sounds like it has a lot of potential (and this is coming from a 20-year-old dude).

As for Fear 3....I agree with ASpoonyBardIsYou, lol.

  • Lol, first time I haven't been interested in any of the games you guys discussed.  Sad day.

  • @ Phil Kollar
Woah Phil calm down!!.... You did a good job.

    -Edit-

I was trying to say I like Matt Helgeson's voice in the podcasts. Iduno maybe im just too used to his voice now.
  • Really not a fan of the mech portions of F.E.A.R. myself, though they were well done they just didn't fit for me.  With that said I still enjoyed the second installment far more than the first.

The co-op sounds really interesting, I am just hoping against hopes it doesn't kill the mood...really unsure of how they would achieve that.  I still think I'm going to play through my first time in single player figuring the 'big' moments will hold more impact whilst playing alone in the dark.

  • Dudes - I gotta say, I'm happy that someone is finally talking about Avalanche! They're one of my favorite studios (and yes, I'm one of those old-school gamers who played games like Magical Quest and Aladdin back in the day and don't understand why there's such a distinction placed on those games these days. "Kids games"? Suck it, mainstream, know-nothing gamers!). Disney's actually been letting them do cool stuff with their tie-in games for awhile.

Chicken Little: Ace In Action for Wii is a third person shooter, based on the Adam West-voiced version of the character from a scene at the end of the movie. For all intents and purposes, it's basically Ratchet & Clank on a non-Sony console. Except with a badass tank - if Metal Slug ever came into 3D WELL, I'd imagine it'd play like the tank stages in their game. Also, it was a launch window game for wii, and it totally proved how third person shooters should be done on motion controls, and was the only shooter from the launch window to not have a jittery cursor. Totally underrated.

And with Bolt, their game wasn't at all about the movie. It was about the fake Bolt tv show in the movie, where Bolt is some sort of super dog.

After years of Disney pumping out cruddy games (basically, after their sweet Capcom/SEGA 16-bit titles), they really seem to have turned a 180 with regards to their video games. And now, they're doing cool stuff completely independent of their licenses, movies and tie-ins. Kingdom Hearts, Split/Second, Epic Mickey, etc.

I'm hoping that under THIS Disney, Avalanche's Toy Story 3 will turn out really cool and unique.

I'm actually hoping that they didn't just put it together in the typical 6-12 month timeframe given to most movie tie-ins. Another studio who does Disney Tie-Ins - Heavy Iron - pitched a Toy Story-based games for current gen consoles awhile ago*, so it'd be cool to know that there's some work going on between both studios; learning and reusing some of their work from that. Especially after hearing your podcast; the level taken from the fictional video game at the beginning of Toy Story 2? It was in the build that Heavy Iron pitched! So I'm certain that they could learn a thing or two from that studio; more studios should have the sort of relationship that Insomniac and Naughty Dog have.

*Anyone interested, check out the unseen64 article on their older (but still current gen) Toy Story pitch:

  • Oh and about Monolith - anyone else really hoping that they're working on Shogo: Mobile Armored Division 2? Shogo was a killer game from the 90's; during the age of "Quake Killers". Even though it was western, it was totally anime-influenced (also like Bungie's Oni). A really cool shooter, featuring really cool robots that turned into hover jet tank things. They had a "Shogo 2" ad in places of FEAR 2, so...

I really hope that Shogo 2 is coming:)

  • These shows rock! Keep up the good work!

  • First of all: thank you for the music info!  Jonathan Mann is awesome! I work all the time and although I buy most games I like I actually don't get to play them... sad but since I got family and friends who have thougher time with money i lend it to them...  so I survive now on podcast, music, and ds/comic time on my toilet breaks...

So this music was a gift to me really!

As for the show don't worry your voice is pleasing (in a non-gay way) and ALWAYS entertaining.  Keep it up!

    a fan
