The Game Informer Show Episode 9

This week's Game Informer show tackles reader questions and comments regarding our highly controversial Top 200 Games of All Time list. Andy McNamara, Matt Bertz, Phil Kollar, and Matt Helgeson pull back the veil on all the arguments that went into the epic list. In the second segment, Andy Reiner and Andy McNamara begin handicapping the possible candidates for Game of the Year, a topic that's sure to be much discussed in the coming weeks. Finally, Jeff Cork, Phil Kollar, and Ben Reeves stop by to shine the light on some of the year's most overlooked games. For more on the year's forgotten gems, check out yesterday's feature story by Jeff Marchiafava. This episode features music released by the Minneapolis record label Heart of a Champion.

  • always good these podcasts!

  • Loooooove the cover art!

  • Thanks for putting together an awesome podcast!

  • Ratchet and Clank had a huge impact :P

but in all seriousness there is no way to really compile a list that would make everyone happy. However you guys did a good job and lets face it, very few people would have tried the same thing after doin it once ;)

  • I completely agree with Helgeson about GoldenEye. It was always great to play back then, but now it's almost impossible to play it.

  • Hey, thanks for the podcast.

  • Sleeper hits ftw.

  • I love the podcasts. Nice to actually hear the voices of my favorite video game reviewers.

  • you guys gave red faction game of the month, mention it!!!

  • oooo ok good, you did mention it. next time ill listen to the whole thing first.

  • Hey, you guys have a show!!?? BRILLIANT!! I love it. That was most entertaining. Loved the discussion about the top 200 and game of the year. Now I have to go spend all night listening to the eight others I missed.

  • I know that Treyarch licensed the game engine from Infinity Ward, but I think it's a total travesty that Call of Duty: World at War was not included in the top 200. That has to be the most replayable game in history, IMHO... and don't get me started about the Zombies and the DLC.

  • Good show. Also good to get another mention. Really looking forward to seeing what gets GOTY.

  • Mod

Woot, my comment got mentioned ^_^

I suppose it would have been better to call it the top 200 greatest/most influential games of all time.  I would definitely put Goldeneye 007 on a most influential games of all time list.

When I think of the greatest games of all time, I tend to think of great games that I can play several years later that are still just as fun as they were back when they first came out.

To that end, I feel like the classics, Metroid, Kirby, Mario, Zelda, Megaman, Final Fantasy, etc. really aged well.  Even though their sprites and in some cases disfigured looking polygons may not look so great anymore, that fun factor is still there.

  • thanks for these guys....

  • Uncharted 2 better get GOTY, becasue GTA IV got GOTY because "it was the highest scored game". I remember reading that last year, and I didn't really think that GTA IV should've gotten it, but I didn't complain because it DID get perfect 10's. Even though there other great games I thought should've had it.

So if Uncharted 2 doesn't get GOTY (and it got perfect 10's as well), I think that would be slightly hypocritical. But again, my opinion isn't what counts. Just waiting to see what gets picked.

  • Gotta say, its enjoyable just listening to you guys discuss different games, whether it be news on upcoming projects, or games that have long since past their release date.

  • Yay!!! i love the gi show!!!!!!

  • I'm glad you guys put Goldeneye in there, along with GOW2 and the Half-life games. I am a little frustrated that you guys ignored FF8, which was totally innovative with its draw/stock and junctioning system. I guess it suffered from Seven's wave of fame.

  • This was a funny podcast.  What you should be asking is

"Why does anyone take what we think as a top 200 as anything but opinion".

    It's you guys top 200.

Without popular vote among lets say 1000 people or so it really doesn't matter what you guys individually think is 1 or 200,

    it totally subjective.

What you can do is get an average of people who play games and see what is the most popular and then list it that way.

That being said I'm Glad FF3 made it to #2 even though it's my number one.
