The Division Film Director David Leitch Discusses The Video Game Movie Stigma

by Derek Swinhart on May 25, 2018 at 02:53 PM

Deadpool 2 and John Wick director David Leitch was recently announced as the director for a film based on Ubisoft's The Division. In an interview with Collider, he shared more information about the upcoming film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain and what he has to say is promising. The film is still looking for writers and a script is in development, but Leitch seems positive about moving forward alongside the producers with the movie.

"We’re all fired up to do it, but it’s just getting on the same page… It could be [in the immediate future]. I like the idea of working with Jake and Jessica and that’s really interesting to me, so who wouldn’t want to aggressively move forward and find a point of view on it and dig in? So it could be, I hope so."

Leitch is also unconcerned with the idea of working on a video game movie and the possible issues that entails. Needless to say, he doesn't believe in a video game movie curse.

"I mean yes and no. They’re two different experiences. Obviously the video game you’re telling your own story and it’s so active, and cinema is all about one person’s point of view guiding a story, you’re telling a story. I think sometimes those things are in conflict, but on a project like The Division again it’s like there’s these bigger themes in there that you can pull one out and attach some great characters to and you can have a compelling story, and also given the trappings of the world that people love, I think you can deliver a good movie.”

The Division is still a ways away, as it sits behind Leitch's many other projects that are up and coming such as his current television work. His enthusiasm towards the project is a good sign for fans of the series, and it indicates that it is probably the next film on his list. For more from Leith, head to Collider for additional quotes.
