Sega Remastering Yakuza 3-5 For PlayStation 4 In Japan

by Jeff Cork on May 22, 2018 at 10:05 AM

Sega's long-running Yakuza series gained a cult following in the West, but its popularity has exploded over the past couple of years. That's in large part thanks to the company's efforts to make early entries – including the upcoming remake of Yakuza 2 – playable on contemporary hardware. And according to Japan's Dengeki PlayStation, it's a trend that's going to continue through the remaining mainline entries in the series.

The magazine has reported (by way of Gematsu) that remastered versions of Yakuza 3, 4, and 5 are coming to Japan, with HD resolution and increased frame rates. The Yakuza 3 remaster is set for an August 9 release, with the next entries coming in fall 2018 and spring 2019, respectively.

There's no word on whether the games will be coming to North America, or on what timeline if they do make it our way.

Our Take
Famitsu has a preview on Yakuza 3, which says the game is essentially the same as the original as far as content goes. Considering the additional effort that went into remaking the Yakuza Kiwami games (remakes of Yakuza 1 and 2), that's a bit of a disappointment. Then again, I'll fully admit that I'm greedy when it comes to Yakuza.
