Sasha 'Scarlett' Hostyn Is The First Woman To Win A Premier StarCraft II Tournament

by Suriel Vazquez on Feb 07, 2018 at 02:50 PM

Sasha 'Scarlett' Hostyn has made StarCraft II history by being the first woman to win a premier StarCraft II tournament in beating two-time WCS Global Champion Kim "sOs" Yoo Jin 4-1 at last weekend's Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Season XII tournament in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Although a handful of women have been making a name for themselves in the StarCraft II scene by winning tournaments, Hostyn is the first to win big at a Premier-tier event like IEM Pyeongchang. Previously, Hostyn had won Major-tier events like the 2012 Battle.net North American Championship and and the 2012 World Championship Series' Canadian Nationals. She is also the second foreigner to win a Premier tournament in South Korea.

Hostyn had been performing well since her return to the StarCraft II scene in late 2015, racking up several top-eight placements at premier events in the run-up to IEM Pyeongchang.

Our Take
Congrats to Hostyn! With any luck, her win will inspire lots of women who might have otherwise steered away from competitive StarCraft into competing more often.
