Cancelled Fighter Rising Thunder Being Released To Community

by Imran Khan on Dec 18, 2017 at 02:17 PM

Rising Thunder, a cancelled indie fighting game first beta tested in 2015, is releasing a "Community Edition" of the game to let fans of the game keep it running despite its death.

The fighter was first pitched as an ultra-accessible fighting game that focused on reading your opponent over execution. It boasted a pedigree of a lot of the fighting game community's biggest names like Capcom's Seth Killian before developer Radiant Entertainment was purchased by Riot Games, the company behind League of Legends. Tony Cannon, the head of Radiant Entertainment, announced Rising Thunder would cease development, but that they would be focusing on a new game.

Today, the former Rising Thunder team announced that they are releasing the latest internal build of the game, which includes online play and local play, but there's no characters or stages that weren't available in the last beta. Additionally, the team is releasing the source code for the servers, allowing the community to tinker with and improve the rudimentary matchmaking server being released with the Community Edition.

Rising Thunder: Community Edition will be released for free in January on PC. The Rising Thunder team also mentioned that they have a new project in the works and will announce it "when the time is right."

Our Take
Rising Thunder's beta test was surprisingly fun and I was bummed out we would never get a complete version of the game. Riot's purchase of Radiant Entertainment has seemingly not bore much fruit that makes it worth losing Rising Thunder, but at least the team is trusting the community to keep what was made alive.
