Reggie Fils-Aime Says Switch Success Comes From Wii U's Failure

by Imran Khan on Nov 10, 2017 at 08:00 PM

In an interview with CNN, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime was asked about the Switch's differences from the Wii U, a system the company has admitted failed in the market.

When asked about the Wii U's unclear marketing, Fils-Aime had this to say. "We worked hard for the Nintendo Switch to make it crystal clear what the proposition is. It's a home system that you can take on the go, play anywhere with anyone, and that's resonating."

The Wii U launched to some confusion thanks to the name and the gameplay propositions of the Wii U gamepad. Retail was full of stories of people not understanding the console was a new system and what if any benefit the gamepad had for playing games and whether it warranted a $300 purchase.

On the subject of software droughts, another major issue with Wii U, Fils-Aime was bullish.

"We've addressed [software droughts] with the Nintendo Switch -- having a steady pace of new launches is critical. Whether it's the big companies like Electronic Arts, or whether it's the smaller independent developer, we need those companies to create content to support us. We have that now with Nintendo Switch."

Nintendo announced that that they're planning to increase Switch production to 30 million units before April 2019, with ten million having been sold so far.
