Grand Theft Auto V Is Now The Best-Selling Video Game Of All Time In The United States

Take-Two Interactive recently reported its earnings for the quarter than ended in late September, and one of the biggest tidbits of news is that Grand Theft Auto V's success has reached new heights. With over 85 million copies shipped worldwide, the open-world action game is now the best-selling game of all time in the United States.

Grand Theft Auto V surpassed Wii Sports' sales, which was previously the most successful video game in the US with 82.83 million copies sold worldwide. Additionally, Grand Theft Auto V's new figure is up by 5 million in comparison to May, when Take-Two reported it had achieved 80 million shipments.

Take-Two also noted GTA Online's huge success, stating that the online mode had its "best quarter yet" in terms of revenue, though the company didn't give specific numbers. During the earnings call, Take-Two also reaffirmed its commitment to post-launch monetization and microtransactions.

Earlier this month, we spoke to Rockstar's director of design Imran Sarwar about how Grand Theft Auto V has managed to be a bestseller for several years, and the continued success of GTA Online.

Our Take
For a game that launched in 2013, it's astonishing to see it continue to grow to such success years after release. Rockstar's commitment to evolving the shared open world of GTA Online is absolutely a factor. It's also interesting to note that Wii Sports, which was previously the best-selling game of all time, was bundled with the Wii console. That definitely had a hand in its success, whereas Grand Theft Auto V has mostly been sold on its own.
