Microsoft Officially Discontinues Standard Xbox One Edition

by Matt Bertz on Aug 28, 2017 at 11:32 AM

When console revisions occur mid-cycle, it's not uncommon for platform holders to discontinue older editions. That's what Microsoft is doing with the standard edition of the Xbox One.

"As is typical for the console industry, we stopped manufacturing the original Xbox One when we introduced Xbox One S," a spokesperson told Glixel. This means moving forward, gamers have to choose between the $249 Xbox One S (available now) and $499 Xbox One X 9 (available November 7).

The original Xbox One, which launched in 2013 for $499, was packaged with a Kinect, but the following year the company started selling bundles without the motion tracking system for $399.

Our Take
This move isn't surprising, and given you can get the Xbox One S so cheap, it doesn't affect pricing in any way. If you are looking to purchase an Xbox One, you should be buying the Xbox One S or X anyway.
