Reader Discussion – What Are Your Tales Of Save File Woe?

by Imran Khan on Aug 08, 2017 at 07:00 PM

With the discussion today of Ninja Theory's Hellblade and whether or not it deletes saves, I thought it might be a good time to share some stories of save file shenanigans. There are probably even people reading this who don't remember when save files were on external devices that were capricious little things vulnerable to corruption or even just getting lost.

I have a few stories of bad save luck. One was when I just bought Final Fantasy X. I forget where, but I remember being told at one point that PlayStation 1 memory cards worked on PlayStation 2 systems for PS2 games. I don't know why I believed this - perhaps because I was a kid who had no expendable income of their own and didn't want to shell out for a memory card shortly after spending money on the newest Final Fantasy. Maybe it just made sense to me because they were pretty much identical and fit in the same slot. Either way, I played about an two or three before I accessed the first save prompt, only to be gleefully told by the PS2 that it didn't recognize any memory cards in the system. I had no choice but to turn the system off.

What about you all? Have you ever had a corrupted card or someone saving over your file? Were you one of the victims of that PlayStation 2 Viewtiful Joe demo that mysteriously erased memory cards? Tell us in the comments! Misery loves company, after all.
