First Chance At A Pokémon Go Legendary Raid Coming This Weekend

by Jeff Cork on Jul 20, 2017 at 09:08 AM

Niantic and The Pokémon Company are hosting the first Pokémon Go Fest this weekend in Chicago, and it could end up being quite legendary. Last week, the companies teased some info about what's coming to the event, and now we've got some more specifics. In short, it could mark the first time that players get to capture legendary Pokémon.

During Pokémon Go Fest, which is being held July 22 in Chicago's Grant Park, trainers at the event will try to capture special Pokémon during timed challenges. They'll be aided by the efforts of players worldwide, who can extend the length of bonuses for the attendees by capturing Pokémon of their own. If everything goes according to plan and the trainers meet their Pokéquotas, they'll be able to participate in the first legendary Pokémon raid. If it's defeated, that Pokémon will start showing up in other legendary raid battles worldwide once the event is over.

Niantic isn't saying which legendary Pokémon we're talking about here, but a trailer below might give you a few hints.

If you do manage to participate in a legendary raid and capture the legendary Pokémon, there are a few things you should know. They're powerful beasts, but they're also loyal to their trainers. In other words, you won't be able to park them at your favorite gym to help defend it – probably in the interest of keeping the game relatively balanced.

Pokémon Go Fest runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central on July 22. It'll be streaming on the game's official Twitch feed, and we'll also have reports on the event straight from the show.

Our Take
Hopefully the event is as exciting as it is in that video – even if players would be gawking and pointing at empty sky instead of a terrifying abomination made flesh.
