by Elise Favis on Jul 16, 2017 at 02:01 PM

Actress Jodie Whittaker was announced today as sci-fi drama Doctor Who's next time lord. Playing as the thirteenth doctor, she is the first woman to take on the lead role in the series.

Whittaker rose to fame with ITV's crime drama Broadchurch, and is replacing the previous doctor, Peter Capaldi, who announced his departure from Doctor Who in January.

Head writer and executive producer Chris Chibnall told BBC that, "After months of lists, conversations, auditions, recalls, and a lot of secret-keeping, we’re excited to welcome Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor. I always knew I wanted the 13th Doctor to be a woman and we’re thrilled to have secured our number one choice. Her audition for the Doctor simply blew us all away."

Whittaker also says that she is "beyond excited" to take on the role in the BBC series. You can watch a short teaser video revealing her as the new doctor below.
