From Final Fantasy XV To Life Is Strange, Nier Director Gets Candid About His Favorite PS4 Games

by Kimberley Wallace on Jul 11, 2017 at 03:30 PM

Yoko Taro, best known for his work on the Drakengard and Nier series, marches to the beat of his own drum, and thank goodness. His games all have their own unique style and aren't afraid to be dark. The director, who doesn't like being photographed and often wears a mask to press events, was recently asked to share his favorite games on the PlayStation Blog for its Discover the Creators series, and he doesn't disappoint in sharing his thoughts.

Taro listed Resogun, Final Fantasy XV, Horizon Zero Dawn, Danganronpa, Gravity Rush 1 and 2, Life is Strange, and The Last Guardian among his favorites, but he also added his own touch to the conversation, sharing everything from his fears while developing his games to drinking with Dananronpa scenario writer Kazutaka Kodaka and Gravity Rush director Keiichiro Toyama. One of my favorite parts of the interview is this quote about Kodaka and Danganronpa, "but when I saw his piercing eyes that appear as though he doesn’t trust anyone around him, I thought “ah, he does seem like the person that would create a mad game like Danganronpa…”

Taro also discussed how he kept worrying Final Fantasy XIII Versus (which became Final Fantasy XV) was going to launch around the same time as the other action/RPGs he was working on (Nier and Drakengard 3). "Looking back, I feel like I was trapped by the curse of Versus for about 10 years," he says. Taro then makes the mood lighter by commenting on Final Fantasy XV's large menu for meals. "The one thing that surprised me the most is their incomprehensible passion towards food and beverage. FF is amazing."

The entire interview is a real treat. You can read it in full here and find out more details on why he likes these games, while Taro also throws in a few life observations and fun stories for good measure.

Our Take
I enjoy every interview with Yoko Taro because he's so candid. One minute he's discussing death, the next he comes back with some hilarious statement. This interview made me smile today, so be sure to read it, especially if you're a fan of Taro's.
