Astro Gaming Comes Under Logitech Umbrella After $85 Million Acquisition

by Kimberley Wallace on Jul 11, 2017 at 06:24 PM

Today, Logitech announced it has acquired Astro Gaming, bringing it to its Logitech G gaming team. Logitech has earned a reputation for its focus on PC, tablets and phone peripherals, but acquiring Astro Gaming allows the company to add console accessories to its products. Astro Gaming has made a name for itself in the console and eSports space for its top-quality headsets and gear. The $85 million cash acquisition makes Logitech a dominant player in the gaming peripheral industry, widening its scope to the console gaming market.

In a blog post, Logitech vice president and general manager Ujesh Desai makes it clear that there are no plans to discontinue Astro Gaming's products and further discusses how the two will operate together. "With Astro laser-focused on designing products for console gaming, and Logitech G focused on building the most advanced PC gaming gear, together we’ve got gamers covered no matter what platform they play on," he wrote.

The acquisition should be complete by early August.

Our Take
Logitech obviously wants to expand its scope and go beyond the PC market it has been targeting. Purchasing Astro Gaming allows it to tap into the console gaming market, and Astro has earned much praise in recent years for its stellar headsets. This is a power move, and one that I think could prove very successful for Logitech. Of course, time will tell what happens.
