Nintendo Switch Online Functionality Shown During Splatoon 2 Direct
Nintendo Switch's full online functionality likely won't roll out until 2018, when the monthly subscription service is offered, but Splatoon 2 players will be able to give it a test run this fall. During today's lengthy Splatoon 2 Direct video presentation, Nintendo gave a detailed walkthrough of the game's online component, including how it tethers to the Nintendo Switch Online's mobile app, which releases alongside the game on July 21.
Splatoon 2 uses a service through Nintendo Switch Online called SplatNet 2. Players can use it on their mobile device to invite other players to join private, league, Salmon Run, and Splatfest battles. The app can also be used to keep track of stage schedules, view stats for the last 50 matches, and check your lifetime "inkage." The amount of ink you spray is then compared to real world locations.
The one example we see of the inkage tracker is comparing one player's performance to the Great Pyramid of Giza. Most importantly, the app allows players to communicate via voice chat. In the footage shown, Nintendo makes this process seem fairly straightforward, with teammates automatically entering a private lobby together.
