Total War Spin-Off Promises Smaller, More Focused Settings

by Craig Taylor on Jul 05, 2017 at 02:20 PM

Today Creative Assembly announced A Total War Saga, a spin-off series for their Total War RTS franchise. Unlike the mainline series which centers around large-scale eras like the Roman Empire and feudal Japan, Saga games will be about smaller conflicts that had major impacts on world history.

The subjects for Total War Saga games will be powder keg events that could have gone a number of ways. These spin-off titles will allow players to explore the events' real and fictional outcomes in a more focused and nuanced context.

Jack Lusted, the director for the first Total War Saga game, says that the series will not be introducing new eras to the franchise, and will instead be zeroing in on previously explored conflicts in the Total War series. Lusted teased that the first Total War game will be a spiritual successor to Total War: ROME II, meaning players should anticipate a title focusing on a historical moment from that era.

Lusted also says that another mainline Total War game is in development alongside Saga, which will be based in a never-before-seen era for the franchise.

Our Take
This seems like a great idea. There's something daunting about the massive Total War games that turns people off, so offering a smaller experience where Creative Assembly can really examine lesser-known historical events will be a fantastic opportunity to draw in wary players.
