The Tone Of Anthem's Story Will Be 'Very Much Like Star Wars,' Says BioWare

by Suriel Vazquez on Jun 27, 2017 at 05:45 PM

Though we only know a few details about BioWare's upcoming shooter/RPG Anthem (like that Mass Effect 1 and 2 leader writer Drew Karpyshyn is working on it), we at least know it's a sci-fi game. What we didn't know, however, was what kind of sci-fi it is.

In a recent interview with Canada's CBC News, BioWare Edmonton general manager Aaryn Flynn mentioned the game would be a "science fantasy" game, leaning away from the harder sci-fi of Mass Effect and more into the fantastical tone of other sci-fi stories. According to Flynn, the Anthem is "very much like Star Wars, very much like the Marvel universe, where you see a lot of amazing things happening."

"Mass Effect is more our real hardcore science fiction IP," Flynn said. "This one is much more about just having fun in a game world that is lush and exotic and really sucks you in."

Flynn also said much of the game's inspiration comes from the people who made it. "We've had folks who have moved into Canada, who are immigrants, and so often those stories find their way in," Flynn said. We have LGBTQ members, and those stories make their way into the game."

Our Take
I think I prefer Mass Effect's harder sci-fi in general, but I'm okay with a change of pace if BioWare can pull it off.
