Super Mario Odyssey's Creators Don't Dismiss Guest Appearance From Donkey Kong

by Kyle Hilliard on Jun 13, 2017 at 12:32 PM

There have been numerous references to Donkey Kong in Super Mario Odyssey since the game's unveiling earlier this year. The city Mario explores is called New Donk City, which is only two letters away from Donkey, and street signs in the game point to Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong. During our Breath of the Wild coverage back in February, we also asked Miyamoto if Pauline lives in New Donk City, to which he replied, "I think so."

We can now confirm, without a doubt, that Pauline not only lives in New Donk City, but is its mayor. That in turn prompted the question – did Pauline wrestle power away from Donkey Kong in Donk City and proclaim herself the mayor and rename it New Donk City? “[Laughs] Well, that’s not the setting that we’ve come up with,” said Kenta Motokura, director of Super Mario Odyssey.

In order to simplify the questions we simple asked, will Donkey Kong make an appearance in Super Mario Odyssey? “Well I can’t say exactly right now," Yoshiaki Koizumi, Odyssey's producer, "But Pauline is there and you know… some interesting things might happen.”

Super Mario Odyssey releases on October 27, and it just may feature a cameo from Donkey Kong.
