The Rabbids Invade The Mushroom Kingdom For XCOM-Style Strategy

by Ben Reeves on Jun 12, 2017 at 03:11 PM

Concepts for a Ubisoft’s Rabbids/Mario game leaked online a few weeks ago, but at E3, Ubisoft went into detail about the actual gameplay, which looks like an XCOM-style turn-based strategy/RPG.

In Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle Ubisoft’s zany bunnies continue their goal of invading other worlds as they enter a reimagined and twisted version of the Mushroom Kingdom. Here, they interact with Mario and his friends. Unfortunately, the Rabbids appearance has caused the Mushrom Kingdom to become unstable, so the two groups will have to work together to save reality.

The game mixes turn-based combat phases and adventure/exploration phases. Characters can jump off their companions to gain extra distance or even jump behind enemies. Each character also has their own special abilities. For example, Rabbid Peach can give friends an extra shield while Mario has an overwatch move that lets him hit enemies when they move.

Kingdom Battle’s creative director is a huge Nintendo fan, and Miyamoto helped inspire his career. Miyamoto has also been a fan of the Rabbids for several years and will now help oversee Nintendo’s partnership on the project. Music for the game is being composed by Grant Kirkhope, whose well-known melodies have graced games like Donkey Kong 64, Perfect Dark, and Yooka-Laylee.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is set for an official release on August 29 for the Nintendo Switch.
