Details are nearly non-existent, but Cryptic Studios in partnership with publisher Perfect World Entertainment Inc. and Wizards of the Coast, announced today plans for a Magic: The Gathering RPG.

Cryptic Studios is known predominantly for the free-to-play Neverwinter and Start Trek Online. Perfect World Entertainment Inc. is known for publishing Torchlight and Blacklight: Retribution among other titles. And of course Wizards of the Coast is known for the Magic: The Gathering card game.

Outside of knowing who is crafting the game, Perfect World calls the planned game a AAA title in its press release, and says it is coming to PC and consoles. Other details like what sort of RPG it is, what it will look like, or when it will release, are all mysteries. Perfect World CEO Bryan Huang said in the press release, “It’s always been a dream of ours to bring Magic’s Planeswalkers to a modern RPG," which is about the closest hint to what kind of character you will be playing as in the game.

Perfect World promises more details will be revealed at a future date.

Our Take
Without knowing much about the world of Magic: The Gathering (I never got into the card game) this seems like a great idea with a lot of potential. Lots of great art and world building already exists, as well interesting tactical mechanics. It frankly seems like something that should already exist.
