Devolver Digital's Indie Picnic E3 Event No Longer Open To Public

by Elise Favis on Jun 04, 2017 at 12:30 PM

Annually, Devolver Digital sets up its "anti-booth" E3 event in a parking lot across from the LA convention center and beside a Hooters. This year, Devolver Digital announced plans to open access to not just the industry and press, but to the public as well. Unfortunately, after being unable to procure the necessary permits, the Indie Picnic is no longer open to the public and will remain private.

"We regretfully inform the public that we have been denied the necessary special use permits to enable us to host the fan-badge portion of the recently-announced Devolver Indie Picnic at E3 this year," writes Devolver in a statement.

Those with E3 industry badges and who have press appointments can still join the event in the parking lot, but fan-badge holders will be unable to take part because of capacity restrictions.

"Opening up more space for the public to experience a unique and memorable celebration of games was something we very much wanted to do for fans who, like us, love video games," continues Devolver in the statement. "We are saddened that we will be unable to share that with them but look forward to working on future opportunities to do so."

For fans at home, Devolver will be livestreaming the event, which includes a line-up of indie games and sponsors including Gambitious, Indie MEGABOOTH, Logitech, and NVIDIA. Devolver Digital is also hosting its first ever E3 press conference this year, which you can learn more about here.

Our Take
It seems like an oversight to have not first obtained the necessary permits before announcing that the event will go public. It's unfortunate, considering it could have been a great way for non-industry E3 goers this year to take part in a fun event.
